Carson City sheriff’s arrests: Three jailed in theft spree at several stores
Two adults and a juvenile were arrested Wednesday after multiple stolen items were recovered in a suspected commercial burglary spree at several stores, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested were Elena Ruset, 22, of Romania and Alex Dumitru. Each face charges of possession of stolen property and burglary, both felonies and child endangerment, a gross misdemeanor. The juvenile arrested faces felony charges of possession of stolen property and burglary.
Merchandise was recovered from numerous locations including Kohl’s Walmart, Target, CVS, and JC Penney.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to CVS Pharmacy at 4:38 p.m. Officers were advised two males were seen with a shopping cart full of items running out of the store to a waiting van that was being operated by a female.
The vehicle was located by a detective at a grocery store parking lot in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East. Inside was the female driver Ruset, Dumitru and the juvenile.
Officers immediate noticed numerous duffel bags. Later those bags were found to contain countless items of merchandise including razors and makeup. Items were scattered on the floorboard, including a new drone box, a blow up mattress and several other new, in-the-box, items among the bags.
The female driver gave officers a copy of a Romanian passport. She was read her Miranda rights and said she understand. A deputy asked why they stole the items from the drug store and the woman advised she didn’t and pointed to the two males in the back and said “they did,” the arrest report states.
The woman agreed to allow officers to remove all of the stolen merchandise from the vehicle. The adult male and juvenile male handed a deputy a large black bag. The deputy asked if all the merchandise could be removed and the woman verbally replied “yes go ahead,” the arrest report states.
The adult male was advised of his Miranda rights and he said he understood. The officer asked both adults why they would come to Carson City and commit the thefts. In unison the two responded saying “I don’t know” with Dumitru also advising that this was his first time doing it and was sorry, the arrest report states. The juvenile also quickly stated he was sorry and wanted to go back to California, the arrest report states.
A deputy asked the woman what was going on and she admitted that she was a “gypsy,” and that the entire crime spree was planned out, the arrest report states. She advised she would wait in the running van and the adult and juvenile would go commit the thefts and run to the van and they would flee. The woman was asked how long they had been in Carson City. She advised she didn’t remember, the arrest report states.
Bail for Ruset and Dumitru: $52,500. The male juvenile was taken to the juvenile detention center.
