Registered sex offenders in Carson City and Douglas County checked during weekend operation
Sex offenders registered in Carson City and Douglas County had status checks this weekend during a sweep conducted by the Nevada Department of Public Safety Parole and Probation and the state's investigations division.
Detectives conducted the operation Saturday, Feb. 2, and did surveillance and made home contacts on 23 supervised sex offenders residing in Carson City and Douglas County. The agency received funding for the operation through a United States Department of Justice COPS grant.
The Division of Parole and Probation is tasked with monitoring sex offenders in the community who are currently being supervised for terms of parole, probation and lifetime supervision, according to a news release. The majority of these cases have special conditions that impose restrictions on the offender. By conducting special operations, the Division of Parole and Probation enhances its ability to enforce rules/special conditions placed on sex offenders after hours and over the weekend.
At the conclusion of Operation Kickoff, the Division of Parole and Probation assisted by the Division of Investigation conducted 23 sex offender contacts which included drug testing.
Operation Kickoff was deemed a success and indicated that sex offenders in the Carson City and Douglas County area were in compliance with their special conditions, the news release states.
The increased officer presence during the weekend allowed for increased home contacts as well as more in depth home searches. Furthermore, the officers’ presence on the weekend may serve to deter future violations.
