Shoe Tree Brewing Co. unveils new Rice Street Lager, talks Carson City partnerships
Shoe Tree Brewing Co. is into its second year in production and has proven to be an asset to the Carson City community outside of doing what it does best: Pouring its own brews.
Whether it’s fundraising or live music shows, Shoe Tree has been first in line to lend a hand when its community has called out for help.
Paul and Jeff Young are brothers and own Shoe Tree together. They both grew up in Carson City and graduated from Carson High School. Which is one of the reasons they feel the need to give back as much as they can to their hometown.
“It’s important to us as members of this community, who grew up here, to give back,” said Jeff. “A long time ago we decided if we wanted to make a change or make a difference, it’s on us. We are the community. This brewery just gives us a platform to do those things, and as we grow the ways we can give back will grow. We want to make the place we live a better place.”
The brothers knew before they even opened shop that they wanted to give back to the community as much as they could. It was so important that it’s actually a part of the initial business plan, according to Paul.
The first fundraiser Shoe Tree held was for a local child who was diagnosed with a tumor at the base of her skull. The parents were out of work to take care of their daughter, and Shoe Tree decided to host a fundraiser to help the family with costs and funds. Overall they raised around $7,000 for the family.
Since then, Shoe Tree created “Helping Handles,” a fundraiser framework for raising money as a brewery that the brothers hope can become its own nonprofit in the future. Other breweries would be able to join in, holding fundraisers under the framework for their own community members in need.
Shoe Tree has raised more than $20,000 in the not-quite two years they’ve been open, ranging from the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Fund, to helping local families with medical costs, to providing funding for funeral costs of families in need, to providing relief for the Camp Fire victims.
In addition, Shoe Tree has already won numerous awards for their beers, locally, nationally, and internationally.
Their most recent partnership is between Shoe Tree and Rice Street Tattoo, Carson City’s newest tattoo parlor. Shoe Tree created the Rice Street Lager, which is available now, for the grand opening party at Rice Street, scheduled for Feb. 9.
Shoe Tree and Rice Street Tattoos have a close history, before either business existed. Both the Youngs and co-owner of Rice Street Tattoos Lezlee Robinson have been involved with fundraising in the community for years, and the partnership seemed to be a no brainer.

Next in line for Shoe Tree is canning and distributing their beers in grocery stores, which should be coming shortly. Costco, Raley’s, Savemart and more have reached out waiting to put the local brew on their shelves.
