Carson City weather: Storm systems to arrive with wind, chance of snow for the rest of the week
Though not as intense as last week, a series of storms will move into the Carson City and Sierra regions bringing wind, rain and snow to western Nevada tonight through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will increase and become gusty over the Sierra and western Nevada on Wednesday, which will help clear out the haze that has been trapped in many valleys since last week.
The above graphic shows the forecast peak gusts for Wednesday afternoon. In addition to rough conditions on Lake Tahoe and turbulence for aviation activity, travel restrictions for high profile vehicles are possible for the wind prone highways such as I-580 between Reno and Carson City, and US-395 between Susanville and Mammoth Lakes.
Western Nevada winds will be initially more subdued as stronger valley inversion keep winds decoupled until the front moves through the region. Late afternoon/evening, wind gusts will be consistent around 40-45 mph. Wind prone locations will experience higher gusts, sooner, generally up to 55 mph. These locations include Washoe Valley and Highway 395 from Doyle to Susanville.
Snow will begin moving into the Sierra later today through the crest and in the higher elevations of the Carson Range, especially north of Highway 50. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe and Sierra. Given warmer temperatures and some areas of rain below 6,500 feet, snow should mainly affect roads near the crest and above 7,000 feet in the Carson Range for this afternoon (I-80, Hwy 50, and Mt. Rose Summit).
The Lake Tahoe Basin is still expected to have travel issues by this evening as any rain changes to snow.
As a split system, liquid totals will be muted for western Nevada due to an appreciable amount of shadowing, generally less than 0.2 inches and in the form of mostly rain.
Foothill locations could receive a couple of inches of snow accumulations mainly above 5,500 feet.
Fortunately, flooding concerns are much more limited. Still, there should be some modest rises mainly on area creeks, according to the weather service.
There will be a brief break between wave Thursday before another, colder system moves through the region Thursday night through Friday night. This colder system may bring snow down to the valley floors.
Tahoe/Truckee could see another 6 to 10 inches of snow with 8-14 inches possible west of Highway 89. Also, 2-5 inches could occur across western Nevada; Fallon may miss most of this snow, however, since precipitation will likely be mixed east of Highway 95 and South of Interstate 80, according to the weather service.
Another storm system is expected to move into the region Saturday night into Sunday. Check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
