Winter Weather Advisory for Carson City area extended, icy conditions expected for commute

With snow falling on and off and slushy road surfaces turning to ice, driving conditions around Carson City will become especially difficult for the afternoon and early evening commute. Motorists are advised to be extremely careful and to drive slow for the commute home.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Reno has extended its Winter Weather Advisory until 4 a.m. Friday morning for Carson City, Reno-Sparks, Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City.

With reports of 7 inches of snow in some areas of Carson City since this morning, the weather service notes there’s a chance for up to 3 inches of snow on all valley floods by the time the weather system clears out. Originally the advisory was to expire at 10 p.m. Thursday night.

Expect poor driving conditions, so please drive slowly and watch for school buses and their stops. Leave plenty of room between cars while driving. For the commute home expect delays on Highway 50, Highway 395 and I-580 through the Washoe Valley.

Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume.

Today's snow is a far cry from what happened earlier this week with heavy rain in the Sierra down to the valley floor causing flooding headaches throughout western Nevada.

In the video below produced by Joe Childs at CarsonWeather.com on Wednesday, Jan. 11, it shows the volume of water from flooding earlier this week. During the 45 seconds it takes to view this video, more than a million and a quarter gallons of water passes by any given spot on the Carson River after recent heavy rains.

Check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
