Carson City Parks and Recreation Kids Klub Lends a Hand
As the holiday season approaches, participants from Carson City Parks and Recreation’s Kids Klub programs were invited to share in the giving spirit.
This past week, children from the Carson City Parks and Recreation joined the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in their yearly non-perishable food drive. Beginning on Monday, Dec. 7, participants in the Kids Klub after school programs begin bringing in their much needed donations in hopes of helping others have a happier holiday season.
As a point of emphasis with the year winding down, Kids Klub staff members were looking for a way to interject community service ideas into program lessons. As explained by Kids Klub Staff Supervisor Sierra Fowzer, “We knew we were going to present Character Counts and figured we could help out a great cause just in time for Christmas that fell in line with the principles that we were presenting.” As it turns out, Joyce Buckingham, Director of The Ron Wood Family Resource Center had just the right cause in hand with the Share Your Christmas Food Drive.
This all culminated in an outstanding day on Friday, Dec. 11 that saw the greater good of Carson City on full display at the Governor’s Mansion. A display that Youth Programs Supervisor Jaye Phillips summarized by saying, “This entire week has been very humbling. As a family, all the kids at each after school site chipped in and provided an amazing amount of items that filled one of our vans.
We were even able to help during the collection with participants from our Middle School Kids Klub site coming out to help collect donations as they came in which was amazing for our middle school participants. Not only were they involved, but they got to see adults from their community coming together and helping others in need. Joyce and her staff have done an outstanding job.”
Efforts like this are true reminders of the good that one idea can bring to any situation, which was echoed by Recreation Programs Manager Meagan Soracco who had this to say, “This is about our community and being committed to teaching life skills that impact these youth, and I’m so happy that we were able to be involved.” So, our hats are off to the talented youth here in Carson City who simply wanted to lend out a helping hand.
Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space would like to thank their Kids Klub participants and their parents for their amazing support this year. Donations for the Share Your Christmas Drive were collected at EVMS, CMS, Bordewich Bray, Carson Montessori, Empire, Fremont, Fritsch, Mark Twain, and Seeliger Elementary Schools and delivered to The Ron Wood Family Resource Center.
