Writing from the Margins: Poetry & Puerto Rico, A Virtual Event from Nevada Humanities
As part of National Arts and Humanities Month in October, Nevada Humanities and the Gender, Race and Identity Department and the English Department at the University of Nevada, Reno, are pleased to present Writing from the Margins: Poetry and Puerto Rico.
This virtual event will feature poets Denice Frohman and Raquel Salas Rivera for an afternoon of readings, discussion, and a question and answer session. This event will be hosted online on Monday, October 19, 2020, at 4 -5 pm PDT.
As part of the event, these poets will share their experiences with writing, as they highlight themes of colonialism, the body and gender identity, translation, and the relationship between literature and liberation. For complete information about this event and biographies of Denice Frohman and Raquel Salas Rivera visit nevadahumanities.org. This online event is free, but requires advance registration here.
“Part of being a global citizen is to understand the deep influences of Puerto Rican culture on the rest of the United States,” notes Dr. Lydia Huerta, Assistant Professor, Gender, Race, Identity Program and Communications Department at the University of Nevada, Reno. “Both Raquel Salas Rivera and Denice Frohman are incredibly talented individuals and are part of a generation of Puerto Rican artists who are weaving experiences of their Puerto Rican gender, national, and diasporic identity with broader universal themes that we can all relate to.”
“We are honored to host Denice Frohman and Raquel Salas Rivera in our communities in Nevada,” notes Stephanie Gibson, Assistant Director for Nevada Humanities. “In this time of turmoil and crisis, it has been remarkable to see the position poets hold in our society to tell hard truths, challenge the status quo, and use their writing to speak truth to power. We are really looking forward to hearing from these poets.”
A recording of Writing from the Margins: Poetry and Puerto Rico will be available at nevadahumanities.org following this event.
This program is produced by Nevada Humanities and the Gender Race and Identity Department and the English Department at the University of Nevada, Reno, with support from the College of Liberal Arts and the Hilliard Endowment at the University of Nevada, Reno.
