Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City preparing for Pirate invasion
Look alive, because buccaneers are sailing into the Nevada state capital for “Pirates on the Plaza,” a fun-filled, family-friendly fundraising event on Bob McFadden Plaza, located between Carson and Curry streets along the old Third Street in downtown Carson City.
Sponsored by Scoup’s Ice Cream and Soup Bar in collaboration with Laura Main of Storytime Photography, Rhonda Abend of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, and with support from The Fox Brewpub, Mom and Pops Diner, and Bella Fiore Wines, “Pirates on the Plaza” is a festive show gifted by the infamous Pirates of Reno, a reenactment and stage troupe led by Commodore Kraken, in exchange for gifting to help the homeless in Northern Nevada.
The event is Saturday, Sept. 8 beginning at 11 a.m.
“This is something we hope will become an annual event,” said Scoup's owner Kimberly Landry. “We want it to be an event that families will come out and enjoy the day while gifting."
Gifting is a pirate custom in which two parties exchange gifts as a way of showing respect.
“The Pirates of Reno are gifting our community with a festive show, while the guests can gift to our local homeless organizations as well as gifting back to the pirates and receiving gifts themselves,” the Landry said.
Event guests can gift $2 and receive a pair of socks, which then should be gifted back to the Pirates of Reno in return for an eye patch souvenir.
A good pair of socks is worth its weight in gold to a homeless person. All socks and money raised at “Pirates on the Plaza” will be donated to help area homeless.
A $5 donation to the Pirates will gift a guest back a spy glass and $15 to receive a pirate sword.
The pirate festival will feature prize drawings throughout the day. These proceeds, along with those raised from spyglasses and swords, will be gifted to local charitable organizations in Carson City.
Fun activities include a costume contest at 12:30 p.m. for ages 0-5 years, followed by ages 6-12, 13-17 and adult.
As for the Pirates of Reno, they will conduct a black powder shoot at the top of every hour during festival hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Biggest Little City buccaneers will also have two stockades set up for comical demonstrations and lighthearted guest interactions. And a treasure hunt will lead to a doubloon along with other games throughout the festival.
Photo opportunities will be available with the pirate ship and a mermaid. Storytime Photography will be gifting a digital, emailed photo to the guests that partake in the photo-op.
Carson City Classic Cinema Club will be showing Walt Disney’s Treasure Island (1950) on the plaza during the festival. VIP seating on the patio at Bella Fiore Wines is available for $5, and includes free popcorn and table service at 8 p.m. for the showing.
Pirates on the Plaza is open to the public. However, quantities of socks and prizes are limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early.
Scoup's Ice Cream and Soup Bar is located at 224 South Carson Street in downtown Carson City. Hours are Sundays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (summer hours).
