Levitt AMP Carson City concludes its 10-week run with SambaDa' this Saturday night
Levitt AMP Carson City free music series concludes this Saturday night with the West Coast's hottest Brazilian band, SambaDá, taking the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center.
Head down to the BAC's Minnesota Street Stage for an unforgettable free concert under the stars. As with every Saturday night concert, there will be food and drink on hand as well as kid’s activities and fun for the whole family. Thanks to a National award from the Levitt Foundation, the Brewery Arts Center has been able to bring in National caliber entertainers every week this summer.
Sponsored in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a private family foundation that empowers communities to transform neglected public spaces into thriving destinations through the power of free, live music, the Levitt AMP CARSON CITY Music Series presents 10 free, family-friendly concerts to the public currently at Minnesota Street Stage.
This Saturday, August 6 at 7pm the Levitt AMP Carson City Concert Series will open at 6:30 with some Award Winning Youth Poets from Spoken Views Collective, fresh off their recent trip to Washington D.C. and then the Chad Wilkins three piece acoustic will take the stage at 7:00pm and SambaDa’ will begin at 8pm.
Dubbed the West Coast’s hottest Brazilian band by promoters, journalists and fans, SambaDá musically unites the Americas. Based in the rich musical traditions of Brazil, SambaDá also references salsa and cumbia, and blends them playfully with funk and reggae beats.
Brazilian natives Papiba Godinho and Dandha da Hora bring profound knowledge and respect for Brazilian music, and together with the entire band, they present a unique musical sound with a universal appeal. SambaDá was formed in Santa Cruz, California by Papiba Godinho, saxophonist Anne Stafford and drummer Gary Kehoe, conquering clubs and festivals across the country with their explosive Carnival-like performances. The band is known for its high-energy percussion, danceable grooves and visually dynamic show.
For over fifteen years, SambaDá has been mixing contemporary sounds with the roots of Brazilian culture. Papiba (cavaco, guitar, percussion, vocals) is a master of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form that draws on music and acrobatic movements. Dandha (percussion, vocals) was born into the carnival group Ile Aiye and started her dancing career at age 6. The other members of SambaDá come from a wide range of styles, generations and sensibilities.
The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open lawn and lot setting. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota. Admission is free.
Brewery Arts Center will apply for the grant again for next year as the Levitt Foundation has a history of awarding AMP grants for multiple years. Online public voting for Levitt AMP Carson City will begin November 1, 2016. If awarded again, the BAC will produce another 10 week concert series in the summer of 2017.
SambaDa' is also Sponsored by Carson Tahoe Hospital and Gold Dust West.
