FISH executive director to be Dems' luncheon speaker
Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends In Services Helping (FISH), will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Rural Northern Nevada’s largest and most complete social services program, FISH provides food, clothing, shelter and medical aid to the homeless, hungry and underemployed within our community, with the objective of helping families and individuals become self sufficient.
FISH has been serving Carson City and other rural communities in Nevada since 1979, providing Food, Instruction, Shelter, and Health care to those in need. FISH does not rely on the government for funding. Ninety-eight percent of their multi-million dollar budget is funded through the local community via donations and grants.
This will be Peckham's first Democratic luncheon appearance since November 2018, and Jim has a lot to catch Carson Dems up on. Top of that list is the recent demolition of the Whistle Stop Inn, which marked the start of FISH's ambitious revitalization project. To be constructed in place of the old motel will be a commercial building and two apartment complexes.
The new development will house and support participants in FISH’s workforce development program, known as Fast Forward 4 Families. FF4F helps connect minimum wage workers with education and training in under-staffed industries like healthcare, construction management, technology, and other trades. The project's slogan is “moving from minimum wage to a meaningful career.”
After 25 years as a corporate executive, Jim Peckham became the FISH Executive Director in 2009. He has experience rebuilding non-profits that are self-sustaining and valued by the local community. He has a Master's Degree from Michigan State and is a member of Rotary and the local Pastor's Association.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, June 27th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. The presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
