Pride Month the topic at Democratic luncheon
The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Aaron Sims, Chair of the Rural Nevada Democratic Caucus. As June is Pride Month, Aaron will be talking about the origins of the Pride movement, why it was important that it progressed the way it did, and what it means in today's political environment. He may also lightly cover his own personal coming out story and how it was affected by living in rural communities all his life.
Aaron Sims has been a Nevadan most of his life. Born and raised in California's Central Valley, his family moved to Rural Nevada when he was 10. His father was a professional firefighter. His mother was a respiratory therapist. By the time he was born, Aaron's father had been appointed Fire Chief of the area where they lived. This helped to instill in Aaron a profound respect for civic engagement and the nobility of public service.
In high school, Aaron participated in and ran many of the clubs and groups that develop leadership skills and support community programs. In addition to student government, Aaron was active with the Builders Club and HOBY, which stands for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership. Builders Club is a student-led organization that provides young people with opportunities to develop leadership skills, engage in community service, and build teamwork capabilities. HOBY is an organization dedicated to training and nurturing the young leaders of tomorrow. Its mission is to inspire and develop the global community of youth. HOBY volunteers dedicate themselves to a life of leadership, service, and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States.
At age 10 Aaron began volunteering at local campaign offices, stuffing plastic bags for door hangers and distributing yard signs. He has since been a campaign manager twice. At age 15 he served the youngest-ever intern assistant to a Nevada governor. He subsequently served as a lobbyist, president of various political organizations, a field staffer, a regional director, a mayoral candidate, and in 2022 was the Democratic nominee for District 16 of the Nevada State Senate.
For the past year, Aaron has proudly served as Chair of the Rural Nevada Democratic Caucus. In this capacity he has worked to build the RNDC by overseeing the creation of new websites for each central committee in the rural counties. He has also expanded the reach of the Rural Caucus to incorporate rural areas of Clark and Washoe Counties. Additionally, he has stepped up fundraising efforts for rural Democratic candidates.
Aaron is proud to have been the first openly gay State Senate nominee in Rural Nevada. He's been with his partner, Spencer, for over four years. Outside of politics, Aaron is an accountant and a small business owner who is working toward becoming an economist in the future.
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, May the 17th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Aaron's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
