Special Screening at Brewery Arts Center highlights independent short films
The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is hosting a one-time only screening of 10 short films made by area filmmakers as part of an international competition that began in 2015.
The Impact began as a writing competition developed by Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Sliver) for the England-based group Create50. Eszterhas wrote a complete backstory, then writers were challenged with, “Can you write 2-minute movie?”
The goal being that the Top 50 scripts would be filmed and turned into an anthology feature film. More than 2,200 scripts and a year later, the top 50 winners were announced, and Phase II of the competition began.
The second phase involved filmmakers from all over the world taking those winning scripts and turning them into short films. The competition continues, as there can be multiple versions of all of the scripts, each made by different filmmakers in different parts of the world.
Six local filmmakers spent over a year producing 10 of the winning scripts from The Impact. Scott Young, who has been part of The Impact since it started, spearheaded the effort.
“Create50 did another competition like this 4-years ago, but they didn’t promote it as heavily as they could have. The resulting anthology film, 50 Kisses, was made up of almost all British filmmakers, even though it was an international competition," he said. "I wanted to see diversity, films made by people from other countries, and it just wasn’t there. So, when The Impact began, I decided I was going to try to get as many filmmakers as I knew in northern Nevada involved and try to tip those scales a bit.”
The Brewery Arts Center heard about the project. When they discovered that almost 100 people: Directors, actors, cinematographers, editors, composers from the community were directly involved in making these films, they wanted to screen them as a way of celebrating community involvement and the spirit of collaboration.
A one-time only screening of all 10 films will take place at the BAC Performance Hall on Saturday, June 2, 2018, starting at 3:00 PM. It will be the only time all 10 films will be shown together in one place. Proceeds from the screening will go to BAC as a thank you for all the good things they do for our community.
