U.S. Senator Kamala Harris to Keynote Celebrate Progress Event in Carson City
On Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 6 p.m., Battle Born Progress will host its biennial Northern Nevada fundraising event, Celebrate Progress, in Carson City. The event recognizes the outstanding work of Northern Nevada’s progressive leaders, activists, volunteers, and organizations for their nonstop commitment to progressive values.
The keynote of the evening will be made by U.S. Senator Kamala Harris. Senator Harris has worked on progressive policy since first elected as the second African American woman in Congress. As U.S. Senator, Harris has worked to forward legislation to provide sweeping tax cuts for the middle class, address the high cost of rent, raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, make higher education tuition-free for the vast majority of Americans, reform the cash bail system, protect the legal rights of refugees and immigrants, and expand access to affordable, quality health care with Medicare for All.
Honorees: The Progressive Leader of the Year Award will be given to Nevada State Senator Julia Ratti. Senator Ratti has dedicated herself to bettering her community in Sparks, Nevada throughout her entire career. From investing time and energy in Northern Nevada’s youth to her time on the Sparks City Council and now as a State Senator, her work is tireless.
The Progressive Legacy Award will be awarded to Emily Reese posthumously. The award is scheduled to be accepted by one of her children. Emily Reese was a well-loved Northern Nevada activist and organizer who passed away last year in her 40s after battling cancer for 9 years. Reese used her fight with cancer to advocate for better healthcare and insurance options. She also worked passionately to improve education and the City of Reno.
Anjeanette Damon, Government Watchdog Reporter for the Reno Gazette Journal will be named as the 2019 Progressive Voice of Reason. Her work and dedication to her craft is an example of journalistic excellence.
The Rising Progressive Leader Award will be awarded to Denise López. As the former Executive Director of the Democratic Party in Washoe County and now the State Director at Faith In Action, López puts the needs of her community first and continues to fight for necessary change. Having only been in Nevada since 2016, López is a rising star fighting for what’s right.
Washoe Education Association will receive the Community Partner of the Year Award for their ongoing commitment to creating real change in Northern Nevada. WEA, under the leadership of Natha Anderson, empowers educators to fight for their students both inside and outside their classroom. WEA is a key partner working actively with BBP during legislative session to ensure decision makers know how educators feel on proposed policy.
