Carson City Host Lions Club 'Recycle Eyeglasses Campaign' a success, 383 pairs collected

The Carson City Host Lions Club recently conducted a special “Recycle Eyeglasses Campaign” over a six-week period from January 18 to February 25 in the Carson City elementary schools. Collection boxes were distributed to the classrooms to encourage the donation of used prescription eyeglasses.
Approximately 383 pairs of glasses were donated by the students and their families as well as elementary school staff. The students at Fritsch Elementary School deserve a special shout-out, as they collected 115 pairs of glasses.
The collected eyeglasses will be taken by Lions to an official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in northern California for processing.
There, trained volunteers sort, clean and determine the prescription strengths of the eyeglasses. The glasses will be sorted to determine those that are usable or unusable, processed, and placed in inventory for distribution to optical missions around the world. Glasses that are not suitable for reuse are recycled for scrap.
Usable glasses will be taken on “optical missions” where eye care professionals and trained Lion volunteers perform vision screenings and dispense the appropriate recycled glasses, free of charge, to children and adults in need.
The Carson City Host Lions want to especially thank Superintendent Richard Stokes of the Carson City School District, as well as the principals of Bordewich-Bray, Empire, Fremont, Fritsch, Mark Twain, and Seeliger Elementary Schools for allowing us to conduct this special campaign. Their efforts were invaluable.
