Healthy Communities January 2017 Meeting Canceled
The January Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) meeting has been canceled since the Nevada Human Services Network award breakfast is at the same time. Healthy Communities would like for staff and group partners to have time to attend the important awards ceremony in Reno to honor the very deserving awardees.
The Feb. 2017 Healthy Communities meeting will take place as normal on Thursday Feb 9th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center. In the meanwhile, a few of HCC’s upcoming events are listed below, and a more complete list can be found on HCC's website.

The Dayton Chili Cookers are again partnering with Healthy Communities’ Dayton Food Pantry for a big chili cookoff and Superbowl party to benefit the Pantry, Sunday, February 5th at the Dayton Valley Golf Course and Grill. Chili cooks are welcome – please contact John Peters at 443-8015 for more information about the rules.
Healthy Communities is developing a new food pantry in Yerington, with HCC's school-based resource coordinator, Shannon Juntunen, and AmeriCorp’s Brittany McDonald. If you’d like to donate, please contact HCC at 246-7550.
Healthy Communities sponsors a free cooking class and dinner with dietitian Kim Mason on the 3rd Monday of each month at 5:30pm at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street. The next class is on Monday January 23rd. The Feb. monthly cooking class is canceled, and classes will resume as normal in March 2017.
Danish journalist Peter Krogh Andersen will be return to Nevada later this winter, and will further study and write about communities in Lyon County. Peter has a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Denmark in International Politics, with a focus on the Middle East. His dissertation was on Turkish foreign policy in the 1990s and 2000s. He also attended Bilkent Üniversitesi, with a focus on Turkey and International Politics, and the American University of Beirut with a focus in Middle Eastern Studies. His undergradate degree was in journalism from the University of Southern Denmark.
