Carson City Sheriff’s Office warns uptick in scammers posing as law enforcement
There has been a recent rise in phone and video scams involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers.
Scammers are using phone calls and FaceTime video calls to contact citizens, posing as officers or deputies from various agencies to steal personal information or extort money.
How the Scam Works:
Scammers are using spoofed phone numbers to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency. During the call, the scammer may claim the individual has an outstanding warrant, unpaid fines, or is under investigation. They often pressure the victim to make immediate payments via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency to avoid arrest.
Some reports have involved scammers making FaceTime or video calls while wearing uniforms or showing fake identification badges to add legitimacy to their claims. This tactic is aimed at intimidating victims into complying with their demands.
Important Facts to Know:
• Law enforcement agencies will never ask for payment of fines, warrants, or fees over the phone or through apps like FaceTime.
• If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal or financial information.
• Law enforcement will never demand payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact the agency directly using official phone numbers.
