Health professional shortages have been a challenge in Nevada for decades. The expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act has increased health care access to hundreds of thousands of Nevadans, creating even higher demand for health care professionals.

Boy Scout Troop 847 continues to serve the young men of the Comstock. Meeting weekly at the Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Avenue in Dayton, the Troop currently has 14 registered Scouts from Dayton and Virginia City.

During summer of 2014, a gentleman was jogging on Windmill Road in Fish Springs when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest. The gentlemen, who had no previous history of heart problems, collapsed in view of a bicyclist. The bicyclist was a nurse and immediately went to the jogger and provided CPR while flagging down two passing gentlemen who called 9-1-1.

By the time 9-1-1 was called, the three bystanders were cycling through CPR to pump blood through the jogger’s body until additional help could arrive to try to restart the heart.

Western Nevada College Baseball hosted Sierra College Wolverines of Rocklin, Calif., Tuesday, for their first home game of the 2015 season. The Wildcats improved to 9-7, topping the Wolverines 15-6. Coach DJ Whittemore gave several of his pitchers a chance on the mound.

DJ Peters started for the Western, he was relieved by Cody Kerns in the top of the third. Ty Fox came in to pitch in the fourth, and Kyle Johnson took over in the fifth. Matt Young pitched in the sixth, followed by Thomas Kerr in the seventh and eighth, and Chase Kaplan closed in the ninth. Peters earned the win.

There are many victims of crimes committed by drug abusers as witnessed in the recent burglaries in Carson City. Along with the victims whose homes were burglarized and whose sense of safety in their homes was destroyed; the drug abusers’ family bonds are broken; their children neglected, displaced, frightened and confused.
