Early morning vehicle pursuit from Carson City to Reno called off for safety reasons
UPDATE: A motorist wanted for burglary in the Sparks area eluded Carson City sheriff's deputies early this morning in a vehicle pursuit that began around College Parkway but was terminated for safety reasons once the vehicle was in Reno, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
The pursuit of the vehicle began at around midnight after a consensual stop at a casino. The suspect said he had to go to the bathroom and then fled the casino, getting into a Pontiac sedan with California license plates. The pursuit began down College Parkway and onto I-580 freeway north with speeds from 75 to 78 mph.
Deputies ran the name of the suspect in the consensual and the plate of the vehicle and it was learned the owner of it had a warrant for burglary out of Sparks with a $40,000 bail amount. The suspect was also known to be armed with a weapon, according to communication with dispatch and officers.
During the pursuit, deputies asked dispatch to notify the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada Highway Patrol of the situation as the suspect's car approached the county line. Once the pursuit got into the Reno area it was ended for safety reasons, said Furlong. Other jurisdictions were notified as well as the district attorney's offices.
In other Carson City sheriff’s matters unrelated to the pursuit: A 26-year-old Carson City man, Justin Chandler, was arrested Tuesday, 5:19 p.m. in the area of Ridgefield Drive on felony suspicion of possession of prescription drugs without a prescription and two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia and having a fictitious registration.
According to the arrest report, officers were called to the 3200 block of Market Street regarding a larceny at Walmart. The suspect allegedly pushed a shopping cart full of merchandise out of the store, valued at $531, without paying. He was confronted by store security and ran from them. It wasn’t the first time he had tried it, security told officers. He had attempted the same thing Feb. 18, also running away and leaving items valued at $456.61.
It was learned that Chandler had arrived in a black Pontiac Firebird and the vehicle was located in the parking lot of the store’s tire center. The vehicle looked like it had been spray painted black recently. The registration returned to a 1966 Chevy pickup.
A deputy checked the VIN to the car and it returned expired as of 2013. A K9, Sepsi, was used for an exterior sniff of the vehicle. The dog alerted to the odor of a controlled substance in the vehicle. The officer looked inside without entering it and saw a marijuana pipe on the passenger floor. The driver door was not all the way secured, with a small gap between the door and the frame, according to the arrest report. Deputies could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Another deputy located Chandler walking in the neighbored behind Walmart. He was detained. He told the officer he was walking back to Walmart to apologize to security for running, the arrest report states.
He told officers the vehicle was not his but belong to his uncle. The officer completed a vehicle inventory prior to having it towed. In the trunk space there was a storage compartment where five bottles of prescription medications were found. He said his uncle must have left the bottles in the vehicle. Officers also located several cans of black spray paint in the back seat.
Dispatch contacted the register owner of the vehicle plates. The female said she was unaware the plates were removed and said she did not know who Chandler was and that he was not related to her husband. Bail: $4,343.
