NCET, Northern Nevada’s largest member-supported non-profit that provide educational and networking events to help people explore businesses and technology, announced their full slate of November events.

The Nevada State Treasurer’s Office announced Monday the start of open enrollment for the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program, offering enrollees an account for a discounted enrollment fee of only $0.01 until Dec. 31.

Greater Nevada Credit Union has contributed $10,000 to the Tahoe Prosperity Center’s Tahoe Together Caldor Fire Relief Fund, bringing the fund’s total contributions to over $53,000. The funds will be distributed to food and beverage employees in the Tahoe region recently impacted by the fire.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, Northern Command West, has received a grant in the amount of $20,000 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. This grant supports the Washoe County School District and its public safety program during the 2021-2022 school year.

The Nevada State Museum will host a Day of the Dead Celebration this weekend from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. As part of the event and celebration, Art students form Carson High School, Pioneer Academy and parents from Empire Elementary School will exhibit Dia De Los Muertos altars.

The state capital came alive Saturday as hot air balloons hovered overhead, residents filled the sidewalks, and emergency vehicles, marching bands, floats, horses and politicians paraded down Carson Street.

Teachers and students enjoy participating in competitive endeavors and events, especially when the winners receive worthwhile Starbucks gift cards and a first place, second place, or third place certificate. The event is the three times per school year annual writing competition.

Nevada Day Balloons

Krysta Palmer, a Carson City resident who grew up in Gardnerville, graduated from Western Nevada College and the University of Nevada, Reno, made history during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo as the first U.S. woman to finish on the podium during individual diving since the Sydney Games in 2000.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and United States Navy Veteran Robert “Bob” Lamson Crowell passed away on Sept. 12, 2020 at the age of 74.

With the decline of the Comstock Lode starting in the early 1880s, Nevada was in the middle of an economic depression. The 1880 census showed a population in Carson City of 4229, by 1897 the population had decreased by more than 40 percent.

Joe Cacioppo, District 7 representative and president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees, will speak via Zoom at Monday's Democratic luncheon. He will provide an update on the issues faced by the board since he last spoke at a meeting of the Central Committee as a candidate for re-election this time last year. He is now in the first year of his third four year term.

UPDATE: A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Thursday night on South Carson Street in Carson City near I-580 died of injuries, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m. The identity of the victim has not been released. The incident is under investigation and an arrest has been made. We will update as more information becomes available.

The Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City will not be happening this year due to non-COVID related reasons, according to organizers.

Like most Carson City carnivals, the Nevada Day Carnival, generally held at Mills Park during Nevada Day weekend, is put on entirely by the Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, also known as RSVP, which helps provide access to services for Nevada’s senior population.
