Carson City has a new fire chief. Battalion Chief Robert S. Schreihans has been picked to lead the fire squad for the capital city of Nevada. The announcement was made by the city manager late Tuesday.

Schreihans replaces Stacey Giomi who announced in December that he was retiring, after 31 years of being with the Carson City Fire Department.

The annual Carson City / Storey County 4-H Fabulous Fabric and Rummage Sale will be held Saturday and Sunday February 14 and 15, 2015 at Fuji Park Exhibition Hall in Carson City.

The sale is a project of the Carson City/Storey County Leaders Council. All sale proceeds benefit the council’s scholarship fund.

The South Lake Tahoe Humane Society has advised of an outbreak of parvovirus at South Shore. The Humane Society notes 11 cases of Parvovirus have been identified in the past 10 days.

As a precaution, the South Lake Tahoe Parks Department has closed the Dog Park located on Al Tahoe Boulevard to thoroughly clean the park as a precautionary measure to prevent further outbreaks under the recommendation of the South Lake Tahoe Humane Society. The park will remain closed for 7-10 days after cleaning as recommended.

Jet Blue Airways announced Tuesday that it would offer nonstop service between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport beginning May 28, 2015. Reno-Tahoe will be the airline's 89th destination and is among a number of new JetBlue routes in the West.

Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Scroggins discovered that the form 1099-R they received for year 2010 was correct. Mr. Scroggins got a loan of $29,700 from his employer’s 401(k) plan in 2007.
He made monthly payments to repay the loan until October 2010. He lost his job because of an undescribed disability and stopped making the monthly payments.

A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 10:21 p.m. on felony suspicion of child abuse. The name of the suspect is being withheld because of the relationship with the juvenile he allegedly abused.
The man is being held on $40,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the 1500 block of Firebox Drive in reference to a child abuse report. Officers met with the alleged juvenile victim and a former step mother.

Carson Tahoe Health and Sierra Surgery Hospital have earned a three-year accreditation by the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality, officials announced Tuesday.
The accreditation process is voluntary and includes a rigorous, unannounced on-site survey administered by CIHQ.

A man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of stabbing his daughter three times in the arm with a fork that was used to stoke a fire, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Arrested was Brett Later, 44, of Gardnerville who was booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of domestic battery and battery with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $30,000.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business has named Mehmet Tosun, associate professor and chair of the Economics Department, the Barbara Smith Campbell Distinguished Professor of Nevada Tax Policy. The four-year professorship is designed to assist in tax policy research at the state and local level, with a primary focus in Nevada.

As both an undergraduate and graduate instructor and researcher, Tosun believes the professorship is another way to bring tax policy research into the classroom.

It’s National Rubber Ducky Day! I have no idea how that is relevant to anything, but now I've got the ‘Rubber Ducky’ song from Sesame Street in my head. It’s also Stephen Foster Memorial Day, so feel free to sing ‘Camptown Races’, one of the prolific song-writer’s most famous songs, instead. Keep the musical theme going today with the Carson Feet Warmers during lunch and the Mile High Jazz Band playing this evening, both at Comma Coffee.

Here are the latest arrests from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office from Friday through early Sunday morning. A 27-year-old Carson City man, Bradley Paul Steelmon, was arrested Friday, 2:20 p.m. in the area of 20 College Parkway on a felony warrant, insurance fraud, issued June 9, 2014 out of Tahoe Township Court.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Jan. 12-18, 2015. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the northbound left turn lane at Carson Street and Hot Springs Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be restricted lanes on East Fifth Street between Linda Kay Court and Parkland Avenue from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two-way traffic will be maintained. Please use caution.

Carson High School Culinary Arts has been named to the 2014-15 Elite 50 by the National Center for Hospitality Studies by the Sullivan University. The award recognizes an exclusive group of high schools that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts.
