Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi to retire
Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi announced that he'll retire in early February of 2015, said Carson City Manager Nick Marano. Giomi is only the fourth paid fire chief in the city's history. He was hired Nov. 23, 1983 and became chief in 2005. He has been with the fire department for 31 years.
Giomi has accepted a position with Nevada Health Centers as their Director of Facilities and Emergency Preparedness. Nevada Health Centers is a federally qualified health center in Nevada and the largest primary care provider for the underserved and/or geographically isolated in the State.
With 16 primary care centers, a mobile mammography program and a mobile dental van, Giomi will be busy coordinating the organization’s emergency needs. Tom Tarulli, currently Assistant Fire Chief, will become the interim fire chief.
"I've been blessed to have been able to serve our citizens of Carson City in such a great job for so long," said Giomi when contacted Friday.
“Carson City is a better place to live because of Chief Giomi and his years of service on a number of fronts,” said Mayor Bob Crowell. “Indeed, Carson City is a safer community because of Stacey and his leadership abilities. I wish him well in his future endeavors but we will miss his thoughtful and comprehensive approach to the issues facing our community.”
Sheriff Ken Furlong said Giomi Stacey is an outstanding public safety fire officer who will leave whoever comes in with big shoes to fill when he retires from the city.
"Having worked with him throughout my term Stacey has been nothing but a great leader in our community and an outstanding organizational planner,” said Furlong. “I have nothing but respect for the man. He will be a leader truly missed when he steps down.”
When asked what sticks out as memorable during the years, Giomi said there’s too many examples to recall. He said what he has come to learn as a fireman and as a leader is the incredible “resiliency the people of this community have shown. I really admire how resilient people are when life throws them insults or challenges.”
Giomi started as a volunteer firefighter with Warren Engine Company Number one (Carson City Volunteer Fire Department) in July of 1980. He was hired as a Fire Dispatcher in November of 1983 and has since held every rank in the department through those 31 years. Giomi graduated from Carson High School and later Western Nevada College, before completing duel bachelor's degrees from Cogswell College in Sunnyvale Calif.
Giomi was Interim Fire Chief during the Waterfall fire in 2004 and was officially appointed Fire Chief on January 1, 2005.
“Chief Giomi has dedicated his life to service to his community and is a superb example of a true American success story having reached the top as a result of hard work and honest service," said City Manager Marano. "While it is difficult to say goodbye to Stacey, his life’s work is on display in the ranks of the brave professionals who make up the Carson City Fire Department. I want to personally thank Stacey and wish him good luck as he makes this very tough, and bittersweet, transition.”
“I would also like to welcome Tom Tarulli, currently Assistant Fire Chief, as the Interim Fire Chief. Tom has both Stacey and my full confidence.”
