Thirty cultural organizations across Nevada have been awarded $194,110 in Major Project Grants by Nevada Humanities.

These grants fund humanities projects across the state and benefit nonprofit organizations and government and tribal entities, including libraries, museums, and schools to fund public and educational programs in the humanities. Nevada Humanities Major Project Grants offer up to $7,500 to facilitate local cultural programs and explore issues that matter to Nevadans.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners voted to approve a three-year employment contract with Andrew Haskin to serve as the permanent County Manager.

Mr. Haskin has served as interim County Manager since September 2022 and as the Lyon County Community Development Director since August 2021. The motion to approve Mr. Haskin as the County Manager was made by Commissioner Wes Henderson and approved unanimously.

The Prison Hill Fire of 2021 swept across 171 acres of land following a dry lightning storm which started multiple fires in a the span of only a few minutes. The burn scar can still be seen — including how close it came to the houses in the area.

Carson City Supervisors approved American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to three Carson City non-profit projects on Thursday, helping transition individuals experiencing homelessness into permanent shelter.

Funding comes from the remaining $1.16 million ARPA funds provided by the federal government in 2021 and approved by supervisors to be used for projects or programs that support the Carson City Housing Plan.

Several wild horses were on the move Thursday afternoon in the area of East College Parkway near Research Way in Carson City. One horse was seen crossing the roadway. Motorists should use caution and be watchful for them while driving in the area.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will begin emergency work on Friday, Jan. 20 to clear State Route 208 through the Wilson Canyon in Lyon County following a major landslide.

Additional funding was approved Thursday for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in Carson City by unanimous vote of the Carson City board of Supervisors.

The center previously requested and was approved for $120,000 and $100,000 during 2022 for the Ron Wood Family Support for COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public's help in identifying an attempted kidnapping suspect. On Monday, Jan. 16 at approximately 4:56 p.m. the suspect, who has frequented the location, went into the CVS Pharmacy located at 1980 N. Carson Street.

Following an assessment of the anticipated overnight weather and road conditions around the University of Nevada, Reno campus and area, a decision has been made to delay the start of nonessential campus operations (campus operations refers to any work performed at the main University campus, office, property, field work or sponsored events in Reno) until 10 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Wintermester classes will continue as scheduled convening at 10 a.m.

MINDEN — Douglas County has launched a damage assessment tool, where the public can report damage to structures and infrastructure in Douglas County.

As a result of the winter-related conditions, all schools in the Carson City School District will be on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023. Buses will also operate on a 2-hour delay, so arrival times will be approximately 2-hours later than usual. There will be no Pre-School classes or breakfast served at school.

Carson City residents might know Friends in Service Helping, or “FISH,” for their thrift stores and food bank, but a new project with big, long-terms goals, helping a higher level of client, is finally taking shape on Carson City’s main street. The FISH Student Housing Project — completion planned for Fall 2023.

Western Nevada is host to both resident and migratory birds, allowing locals to view a wide variety of species throughout the year. You may be noticing Bald Eagles beginning to congregate along wetlands and calving fields, and Juncos and Western Meadowlarks exploring the underbrush for seeds. UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Reno has upgraded its Winter Weather Advisory to a Winter Storm Warning through Monday night for Carson City and surrounding counties.

Heavy snow continues around the region bringing an additional snow accumulations of at least 5 inches or more to the greater Reno, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. The weather service advises difficult travel conditions will continue through the day, impacting the evening commute before tapering off later Monday evening.

Northern Nevad indie author and illustrator, Shelby deBraga, has released a free Children’s eBook, "Bennie the Bear — Friends of the Forest." deBraga is launching the book for free for 5 days, until Jan. 20, to share with young adventurers ages 2-8 years old and their nature-loving family members.
