Drier conditions will prevail for the New Year's weekend, but temperatures around Carson City, western Nevada and the Sierra will be quite chilly, according to the National Weather Service. Meanwhile, another winter storm with mountain snow and widespread strong gusty winds is expected to arrive beginning late Monday.

A 39-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

A one antler’d deer visited Eleanor Bernsten's home near Carriage Square Park in northwest Carson City Wednesday. The deer has visited one other time before. Her residence sees its share of wildlife, including a bobcat that she calls "bobkitty" who stopped by earlier this month for a peek inside.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing efforts to insure public safety for visitors and residences during the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations happening in Lake Tahoe. Public safety is the number one priority, and that is why DCSO is asking people to be aware of the following information:

Following November’s deadly crash at the intersection of I-580, Highway 395 and Highway 50 that killed two and left several injured, many residents have questioned if this crash and others at the intersection could have been avoided if the original planning design of the freeway, which included an overpass between I-580 and Highway 50, had been finished.

In the past two years, at least 21 crashes have been reported at or near the intersection, many including rollovers, vehicles catching on fire, and numerous injuries.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the most recent Nevada Association of School Boards Award winners. Carson High School Counselor Bridget Gordon was honored as the state’s School District Employee Making a Difference; Trustee Mike Walker was honored as the state’s Director of the Year; and school board Trustee Joe Cacioppo was honored as the Individual School Board Member of the Year.

Harry Reid, who rose from abject poverty in rural Nevada to become one of the most influential state and national leaders, died on Tuesday, sources confirmed to The Nevada Independent. He was 82.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division is asking for assistance in identifying a man involved in a petit larceny case where packages have been stolen from porches.

The Brother Dan Show, a long-running local music livestream that airs Mondays at 5:00pm, announced a new sponsor and location, Bank Saloon in Carson City. The new venue will allow special guests and live audiences to again be part of the show, beginning Monday, Jan. 3.

UPDATE 11:50 AM: I-580 in both directions through Washoe Valley is now open as of late Tuesday morning, according to the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division.

The Nevada Department of Transportation had closed I-580 through Washoe Valley in both directions on Sunday from Eastlake Exit 10 to Bowers Exit 16 in Washoe County. Motorists can also take Alt 395 from Davis Creek Park to Eastlake Boulevard.
