The Carson City road construction report for the week of Oct. 18-24 continues to highlight the Roop Street widening project which is expected to be finished by the end of the year. The following impacts are expected this week:

— Roop Street is now open between William Street and Robinson Street.
— Roop Street will have intermittent lane restrictions from Robinson Street to Washington Street for striping.
— William Street will have intermittent lane closures at Roop Street on Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for westbound traffic.

Hundreds made their way to the Carson City Courthouse today, the first day for early voting in Nevada.

A record number of people could be voting in this election, said Alan Glover, Carson City Clerk-Recorder.

"I think it's going to be high again, just like 08. I see maybe a 90 percent turnout when this is done," Glover said. "I think the Senate race is cranking them out."

The Obama Internet policy is taking a bit of a different turn besides calling for increased internet connection accessibility. Currently, the Obama administration and law enforcement and security agencies are pushing for new regulations of the Internet and the telecommunications industry. If these new laws pass, it will grant the government greater access for surveillance purposes. Washington already has accessibility to a broad array of communications for monitoring purposes, and this will expand that access.

Pat Wiggins, director of Animal Services for Carson City, has resigned after 10 years of service.

According to a news release by Carson City Health and Human Services, Wiggins is responsible for recently bringing the progressive “Trap Neuter Release” program for feral cats to Carson City and was a regular presenter at Capital City Farm Days, an annual educational program for students held at Fuji Park.

A much-anticipated face-to-face debate between U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and his GOP opponent Sharron Angle on Thursday displayed stark contrasts between the two candidates but provoked little in the way of controversy.

Carson City and portions of Western Nevada could see heavy rain by the end of the weekend, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.

A debate Wednesday between Democrat Secretary of State Ross Miller and his Republican opponent Rob Lauer spent most of the time on past controversies, including Lauer’s alleged assault of a woman in a bar and Miller’s track record of prosecution as a Clark County deputy district attorney.

CARSON CITY – A Nevada lawmaker has asked for a bill to be drafted to require bottled water to be subjected to the state sales tax.
Assemblyman Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, said bottled water is included under the sales tax exemption for food in Nevada even though it has no nutritional value.

Construction near the intersection of Northridge Drive and Russell Way in Carson City prompted a Carson Now reader to ask what kind of work is being done in the area.

The reader writes: "What is going on with the protected wetlands area north of Northridge Street between the freeway to the east and behind the houses on Eastridge to the west? It looks like they are trying to fill it in with dirt with the equipment that arrived this morning. All public access was closed off as of Monday. Please investigate and report."

Those registered voters who don't want to wait until Election Day, Nov. 2, to cast their ballots can do so daily beginning Saturday and ending Oct. 29.
Voters can go to the Carson City Courthouse, 885 E. Musser Street to vote. The hours are as follows:
Saturday, Oct. 16 and Oct. 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday through Friday, Oct. 18-22, and Oct. 25-29, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CARSON CITY – Nevada is projected to lose more than 50,000 residents by 2014 because of the ongoing state economic slump, state Demographer Jeff Hardcastle said today.
The short term projections are bleak under either of two models developed by Hardcastle to forecast Nevada’s population growth through 2030.

The event drew a couple of hundred supporters, and about 50 protesters who stood on the other side of the park next to Highway 50.

Angle spoke for about two minutes and quickly left.

A 49-year-old Stateline man died in a motorcycle accident on Sunday south of Gardnerville, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

The accident, reported at 7:16 p.m., involved the collision of a pickup with the motorcycle, authorities said.

Preliminary crash investigation details indicate that a silver 2002 GMC Sonoma pickup driven by a 59-year-old Gardnerville man was traveling south in the left turn lane and was attempting to turn left, or east, onto Palomino Lane.

The Carson City Deputy Sheriff’s Association has set up an account for Deputy Kip Lee who has recently been diagnosed with myeloma, a type of bone cancer. Deputy Lee will be seeking treatment at a cancer center in Utah for three months.

Deputy Lee, a married father of three, has been a law officer in Carson City for more than five years.
