After a summer that netted 15,000 marijuana plants on public lands that extended over four Nevada counties, the state's Department of Public Safety urges caution as hunters head for the woods and secluded places this fall.

Marijuana grows and other illegal enterprises are being encountered on public lands with increasing frequency, according to the department.

Nevada's statewide gaming win shot up 11.51 percent in August compared to the prior year, according to the Gaming Control Board report out today.

The Las Vegas Strip — the state's most profitable gaming area — did great business in August, with a 21 percent increase over prior year. That offset loses in other areas of the state, such as Washoe and Elko counties.

The Carson Valley area that includes Carson City saw an increase of 7.73 percent. South Lake Tahoe's win increased by 7.2 percent.

Taxes, the state budget and a looming revenue shortfall in 2011 took center stage Thursday in the second debate between the two major party candidates for Nevada governor.

CARSON CITY – Members of the Republican Assembly Caucus today called on state Labor Commissioner Michael Tanchek to delay implementation of a new prevailing wage rate in Nevada until the Legislature has an opportunity to review the methodology.
The caucus is concerned a flawed process resulted in the new prevailing wage rate that took effect Oct. 1. There is a 30-day period to file an objection.

An accident about 7:45 this morning had traffic tied up along Fairview and 5th Street in Carson City. Care Flight transported one patient to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Traffic along Edmonds, Fairview and 5th Street was halted as Care Flight landed near the Nevada State Prison.
The vehicles involved in the accident received major damage, according to authorities at the scene.

CARSON CITY – State Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio said today he will make an endorsement in the neck-and-neck U.S. Senate race within the next few days.

Rick Oshinski has resigned at CEO of P3 Development Inc. of Sacramento, the firm picked to develop the Nugget Project. But he will still be close by.

In a letter to his colleagues, Oshinski said he was leaving the company to return to his former home of Carson City to join the law firm of Scarpello & Huss, Ltd.

CARSON CITY – A Fallon attorney who has won two public records cases against Storey County is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to require the local government to pay his requested fees and costs for bringing the actions.

A woman faces felony charges after allegedly twice stabbing another woman in a Carson City fight.

Lynsey Kieffer, 21, was arrested Monday at 1 p.m. for felony battery with a deadly weapon, felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

She is accused of stabbing another woman in the arm and back outside a downtown Carson City casino. Security cameras captured the scuffle between the two women, and showed the victim walking back to the casino covered in blood.

When P3 Development presented an update on the Nugget Project on Sept. 27, they included a range of estimates for annual lease payments that Carson City would have to pay for the public portion of the project.

Those payments ranged from $946,000 to $2.2 million per year.

But it wasn't clear then was how much of those lease payments was for the land owned by the Hop & Mae Adams Foundation, and how much would go to P3 for the lease-to-own deal for the buildings.

Saturday, Oct. 16 is Carson City Community Flu Vaccination Day, with vaccines offered to the community at no cost.
It is the seventh year for the program. Last year, there were 8,000 seasonal flu shots given and 21,000 H1N1 shots administered, health officials said.
Approximately 5,000 of the doses have been ordered and will be ready to administer on Oct. 16, said Susan Pintar, county health officer.

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, whose parent company is Vail Resorts, announced today that it has acquired Accommodation Station, the third largest property management company in the South Lake Tahoe market.

The 34-year-old Accommodation Station was owned by Greta and Mike Hambsch, who grew the business to become one of South Lake Tahoe's premier, full-service property management companies for condos, mountain chalets, cabins and luxury homes for short- and long-term rentals.

A Carson City woman was arrested Friday afternoon after deputies found her high-school-aged son had been left alone for 12 days in a home filled with trash and pet waste, but little food.

Kelly Pray, 34, was arrested for gross misdemeanor child neglect.

Deputies were alerted by school officials who were suspicious of the boy being absent from class. What they found at the home in the 3000 block of Sunrise Drive left them fighting for air to keep from vomiting.
