Carson City can expect heavy rain with arrival of weather system
Carson City may get at least a quarter to a half inch of rain with a weather system that will make its way through the region beginning Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and carsonweather.com.
Significant rainfall is expected with the system that is now making its way through the central and southern California coast and heading east.
The brunt of the storm, which also calls for scattered thunderstorms, will be from Interstate 80 southward, including the Carson City, Lake Tahoe and Reno areas. Later in the day it should move eastward to Fernley, Fallon and Yerington. Some areas could receive up to one inch of rain locally and some small hail, the weather service reports.
Snow levels are to remain above 8,500 feet through the weather event. There is a possibility that Sierra passes above 8,500 feet will receive snow that could cause travel difficulties Sunday through Monday, according to the weather service.
Passes of concern include the Mount Rose summit, Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes. Motorists should keep in mind that higher Sierra passes will be subject to chain controls, and in some cases, closure is possible.
By Monday the storm should move further to the east and south, with heavy rain anticipated for portions of Mineral and Lyon counties in Nevada and Mono County in California.
