Nevada Health Centers’ School-based Health Center, located at 618 W. Musser Street in Carson City, will offer COVID-19 and flu vaccinations to adults and children during a walk-in clinic Wednesday, June 8, from 9 to 11 a.m.

UPDATE 2:41PM: The two injured Nevada Department of Transportation employees who were struck by a pickup Tuesday afternoon on US-395 north of Topsy Lane were part of a surveying crew and were not in the roadway at the time of the crash, according to Nevada State Police. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The highway is open. Impairment is not suspected at this time, said Trooper Charles Caster.

Douglas County and Carson City emergency crews responded Tuesday afternoon to Topsy Lane and Highway 395 for a vehicle crash that involved two NDOT employees who were reportedly struck by a vehicle.

UPDATE: In a June 2 letter, NV Energy President and CEO Doug Cannon alerted customers that the utility will ask the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada for a general rate increase of 8.12 percent, or $8.71 for northern Nevada customers. If the rate review is approved as filed, the increase would be effective Jan. 1, 2023.

The Comstock community of Silver City offers a summer full of public programming

Silver City's summer STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) got its start in 2004. The historic Comstock community’s summer 2022 public programming, sponsored by many groups, includes family friendly outdoor concerts, a monthly game night, and a meditation session.

On May 28th Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 joined other veterans organizations to place flags on the graves of veterans from all services at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

Cooler weather led to a big turnout of volunteers. Additional veterans' events by the Elks is a breakfast on the second Monday of every month and an annual veterans dinner, free to all veterans, on Veterans Day in November.

The vacant chair at each lodge is a symbol of our motto: ‘As long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them'.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties hosts its June meeting on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 9am via Zoom (connection details below). The public meeting includes member updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, and presentations by guest speakers.

UPDATE 4PM: The brush fire in a field off of North Carson Street near Medical Parkway and I-580 has been knocked down and is in mop up phase. No structures were damaged however a fence was burned. The fire is estimated to be around 1/3 of an acre, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Micah Horton. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday afternoon to a brush fire in the 4500 block of North Carson Street near the I-580 freeway.

The first noticeably happy people to attract my undivided attention were San Diego roller-bladers, skating down the boardwalk with music in their ears. This was 40 years ago or so, and these dancing athletes were clearly happy to the core. It made me smile and even laugh in the wake of their sheer joy.

I’ve always known my lawn was less than perfect. Now, after reading a fascinating article the other day, I find out that I have actually created a modified tapestry lawn! In the age of trying to live more sustainably, especially in the face of severe drought, the perfect manicured lawn is not environmentally sensitive or practical.

From their Senior Sunrise in September 2021 to their Senior Sunset June 1, the Class of 2022 has reached the end of their Carson City School District journey. Senior Sunset took place on Carson High’s front lawn from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and students enjoyed a taco truck, a bounce house, and one another’s company.

Kantu Inka will give 2 free concerts in Dayton this summer

This summer there will be two concerts for all ages in Dayton with Carlos Ocampo and Julie Lozada Ocampo of Kantu Inka.

The duo brings Peruvian culture alive with music and an introduction to traditional instruments of the Andes such as zampoñas, quenas, charangos, bombos, and chacchas. Both concerts are free and open to all.

The Nature Conservancy in Nevada and Sierra Nevada Journeys will host a Family STEM Night and Open House from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at River Fork Ranch Preserve, 381 Genoa Lane, Minden, Nevada.

Nevada plans to divest tens of millions of dollars away from businesses involved in the manufacture or sale of assault weapons.

Treasurer Zach Conine made the announcement Thursday morning, and in an interview with The Nevada Independent, said the instruction to divest from those companies will apply to an estimated $89 million out of the $49 billion investment portfolio managed by the treasurer’s office.

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of N. Stewart St. and Burton for grand larceny and drug possession after allegedly stealing a pallet jack to move a shrink-wrapped piano on the side of the road.

Truly a “Tom Cat”, Gentle Ben was living on the streets in Northern California with his homeless owner. Animal Control captured him and placed him in a small steel cage at a high kill shelter. He was too scared to eat and wouldn’t interact with any of the staff. He was quickly placed on the euthanasia list.
