The Lodge Assisted Living Community in Carson City will host a free seminar on long term care benefits available to veterans and surviving spouses on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. Veterans, surviving spouses, and family members who care for them are invited to attend the event.

Richard P. Schulze and Melissa Hartman, both experts in veteran’s benefits will explain the VA’s Non Service Connected Disability Pension. Attendees will learn what it is, who qualifies and how to apply.

A small plane crashed near Stagecoach killing two. According to Ian Gregor of the FAA, the plane went down late Thursday or early Friday in Misfit Flats in Stagecoach. A motorist driving on Friday afternoon discovered the crash.

A Carson City woman faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and failure to maintain a single lane of traffic after an accident on Thursday night in which her vehicle hit a light pole in the 3700 block of North Carson Street.

The 64-year-old woman, a state employee, told officers she had not been drinking but then admitted to one drink at a local bar and restaurant. Officers report the woman had blood on her face and chest. She declined medical attention after an evaluation by Carson City Fire Department personnel.

Plans for a new Sportsman's Warehouse store at the Carson Mall have been submitted to the Carson City Building Department.

The outdoor retailer will become the new anchor tenant for the mall and take over 47,713 square feet of space that was previously vacated by Gottschalk's five years ago.

Sportsman's Warehouse had previously tried to open a store in the Southgate Center in Carson City in 2009. But financial difficulties with the parent company at the time shuttered that effort just short of it opening to the public.

Two Sierra Nevada black bears, a mother and her cub, were released in the foothills in Douglas County near Kingsbury Grade Thursday night after being caught by Nevada Division of Wildlife officials earlier that morning.

Between June 7 and August 4 the Carson City Library engaged a record breaking 2,750 youth, ages 6 – 17, in signups for the 2013 summer reading program and attendance in summer learning activities. In that time, more than 21,788 items circulated from the library’s youth collection, primarily traditional books but also e-readers like Kindles, iPads, PlayAways and PlayAway Views.
