Carson City woman faces DUI charge after her vehicle hits light pole, refuses field sobriety tests

A Carson City woman faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and failure to maintain a single lane of traffic after an accident on Thursday night in which her vehicle hit a light pole in the 3700 block of North Carson Street.

The 64-year-old woman, a state employee, told officers she had not been drinking but then admitted to one drink at a local bar and restaurant. Officers report the woman had blood on her face and chest. She declined medical attention after an evaluation by Carson City Fire Department personnel.

She also declined to give officers a preliminary breath test at the accident scene and refused standardized field sobriety tests, according to the arrest report. The arresting officer reports he could smell alcohol coming from the woman's breath.

A witness account of the accident showed the woman was in the left turn lane facing south on north Carson Street at College Parkway. She made a U-turn, left the travel lanes, went over the curb and her vehicle ran into the light pole, the arrest report states.

The woman was taken into custody and taken to jail for evidentiary testing. Once at the jail the woman submitted to breath testing but failed to submit proper samples and refused blood testing the arrest report states. A telephonic search warrant was granted by Judge Armstrong and blood samples were taken from the woman. Bail: $1,239.

In other arrests:

A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested near the intersection of Fifth and Curry streets on Thursday, at 11:38 p.m. He faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and not having a proper license plate lamp.

The vehicle the man was driving, a 1990 Acura sedan, was stopped because the license plate lamp was not functioning and the the plate was heavily obstructed with some kind of black dirt making the plate illegible, the arrest report states. Officers spoke with the driver and it was determined the man had a strong smell of alcohol coming from his breath.

Officers asked the man to take standardized field sobriety tests. The man appeared unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. He was asked questions from the Carson City Sheriff's Office field sobriety test questionnaire. All tests completed had unsatisfactory results, the report states.

A preliminary breath test was given, in which the man blew a .153. He was placed into custody. At jail an evidentiary breath test was given. Two samples came back, one of .237 and the other .235. Bail: $1,204.

— A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 2800 bock of Merrimac Way on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 1:55 a.m. He faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.

According to the arrest report, a female witness, the mother of the suspect, said that her son had bit the woman's fiance. Officers met with the mother and the fiance. The victim was intoxicated and admitted several times that he had been drinking, the arrest report states.

The victim said he and the woman had been in a dating relationship for the last seven years. He said that at around 1 a.m. the son came over to the residence and began yelling at him in the driveway, the arrest report states.

During the dispute the son attempted to hug the victim. The victim pushed the suspect away and then the suspect bit the victim's right shoulder, the arrest report states. The victim pushed the suspect away and bit the suspect back to get him off of him, the arrest report states. The victim had red bite marks on his right and left shoulder, the arrest report states.

The mother of the suspect said she watched the argument from inside and confirmed that her son came to the residence and got into an argument with her boyfriend. She said her son was acting very aggressive toward the boyfriend. She said she saw her son bite her boyfriend.

Officers spoke with the suspect, who was drinking an alcoholic beverage on the front porch. He told officers there wasn't an argument and said he was in his house making music the entire night. He then changed his story and said he was setting up a punching bag. The suspect declined to acknowledge there had been a fight, the arrest report states.

The suspect had a bite mark on the back of his right shoulder and a bite mark under his right arm but refused to acknowledge he had injuries and refused medical treatment, the arrest report states. Based on statements by the mother who witnessed the fight and the victim, the man was taken into custody. He submitted to a preliminary breath test where he blew a .135. Bail: $3,137.

— A 49-year-old Carson City woman was jailed Thursday after being arrested at 5:12 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Roop Street. She faces a misdemeanor charge of contempt of court with a warrant issued July 31, 2013. Bail: $244.

— A 19-year-old Carson City man was booked into Carson City Jail on Aug. 14, 1:45 p.m. on a misdemeanor warrant out of Carson City Justice Court.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.
