Carson City will provide Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with public works and Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the dropoff locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. The program continues to be a success. Last year the effort redirected 59 tons of wood waste from the city's landfill.

The Carson City Fire Department has filled an upcoming vacancy by promoting from within. Captain Bob Schreihans has been named the Department’s Chief of Emergency Medical Services and Training.

Battalion Chief Schreihans replaces retiring Battalion Chief Eric Bero.

A 55-year-old Carson City man was arrested Dec. 25, 9:31 p.m. near Nevada and Park streets. He face misdemeanor charges of driving with an expired registration, no proof of insurance and obstructing an officer.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded on a call of a possible DUI driver. The man was stopped by a Carson City Sheriff's Office sergeant for having expired California registration on his vehicle and was unable to provide proof of insurance.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is asking people in the Eagle and Carson Valleys to refrain from burning wood this week during a period of stagnant air. Where wood is the only option, people should burn as cleanly as possible.

Strong temperature inversions and stagnant weather conditions can cause air pollution levels to increase rapidly in the valleys of Carson City and Douglas County.

Nevadans should monitor their credit and debit card statements for unauthorized transactions as Target continues to monitor a security breach that has exposed data from 40 million customers nationwide, said Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

“Nevadans need to be vigilant and monitor their credit and debit card statements closely, especially Target shoppers who visited the store this holiday season,” said Masto.

Prosecutors say the state will appeal a federal judge’s order to grant a new trial for a Nevada prison inmate who was a teenager when he was convicted in the 1995 shotgun death of a 63-year-old man at a Carson City gun range.

A 21-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday on a felony failure to appear warrant issued out of Reno Justice Court on drug charges.

Shelby Moorhead is being held without bail on the felony warrant and will be extradited to Reno. She also faces a misdemeanor warrant charge of being in violation of a suspended sentence. There is a $1,000 bail amount issued for that.
