Prescribed fires are planned around Lake Tahoe beginning Monday, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Recent rain and snow made conditions too wet for burning this week, but fire management staff expect conditions to be dry enough for burning next week.

Smoke from March 29 prescribed fires in the Stateline area did drift into Carson City and Lyon County.

After years of cuts and layoffs Lyon County has seen an increase in funding and balanced a budget with no cuts of employees. In the past several years the County has eliminated 120 positions, a 30 percent workforce reduction.

A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday for felony possession of drugs after she allegedly attempted to smuggle a balloon with heroin inside to give to an inmate. The inmate faces a felony charge of conspiracy.

According to the arrest report, the woman accused of smuggling, Angela Moen, was booked into jail on a warrant and had made arrangements prior to being jailed to bring in the heroin to share with the inmate, Karina Decender, 23, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report.

Carson City Fire Department responded to two motor vehicles accidents Friday morning. One was in the northbound lane in the 2700 block of Carson Street and the other was in the intersection of Carson and Clearview involving a street sweeper.

At least one person was injured in the first accident, reported at 7:44 a.m. at Frontage Road and Sonoma streets and was taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Western Nevada College history instructor and researcher Lane Simonian will offer a free presentation on Alzheimer’s disease on Thursday, April 17, 7 to 9 p.m. on the Carson City campus, in Bristlecone Building room 332.

Lane Simonian, who teaches European civilization at WNC, will focus his presentation on the role that peroxynitrites or potent neurotoxins have in triggering Alzheimer’s disease.

The long-awaited Sportsman’s Warehouse is going to hold a really big ribbon cutting this Saturday morning to “officially” open their new store located in the Carson Mall.

Though they have had a “soft” opening this past week, the official opening is on April 5. Executives from Sportsman’s corporate and the Carson City Board of Supervisors will be attending the event coordinated by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce beginning at 8:30 a.m. Also in attendance will be the following beauty queens:

A 53-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and four misdemeanor charges including two counts violation of a suspended sentence.

Scott Alan Tucker is being held on $10,374 bond. According to the arrest report, deputies with the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team conducted a warrant service on Tucker at a motel room in the 2700 block of South Carson Street.

An alcohol compliance check Friday, March 28 at 37 local businesses that sell alcoholic beverages had two establishments that failed the compliance test, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
