This week's edition of Capital Crossfire features a discussion, "Saving Western Nevada Athletics, Are the Wildcats an Endangered Species?" The program features Helaine Jesse Morres, president of the Athletic Foundation of Western Nevada College and Garrett Lepire, youth sports advocate and serves on the Athletic Foundation board.

Freshman outfielder Bradley Lewis delivered Western Nevada College's second walk-off victory of the 2015 season on Friday afternoon against Utah State University Eastern. Lewis stroked a walk-off double to score Jon Guzman as the Wildcats rallied for a 7-6 baseball victory over the Golden Eagles at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Thursdays get busy in Carson City. You can choose the Legislative Showdown Basketball game at Carson High and watch the battle of the Donkeys vs. Elephants. The WNC Wildcats take on the College of Eastern Utah this afternoon on the baseball field. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world. As the 2015 Western Nevada College baseball and softball seasons near completion, it’s time to come out and cheer on the Wildcats at their last weekend home stands. “Stack the Stands” days will offer outstanding college softball and baseball, along with multiple opportunities to win great prizes while supporting the athletics programs.

Nearly perfect relief pitching was the key to Western Nevada College sweeping a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Colorado Northwestern on Saturday in Rangely, Colo.
Sophomore pitcher Max Karnos tossed a one-hitter over five innings of relief as the Wildcats of Carson City won the opener, 6-1, and then Connor Zwetsch and Ty Fox allowed just one hit to the Spartans for the final 6 innings as WNC completed the sweep with a come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

After two weekends on the road against two of the best teams in the nation, the Western Nevada College softball team showed that it knows how to win when the playing field levels. WNC completed a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference softball sweep of Colorado Northwestern on Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City.

The Wildcats backed the six-hit pitching of Kristina George by lining a homer and five doubles in a 6-3 opening-game victory, then Gabriella Canibeyaz delivered two hits and two RBI in a 7-3 second-game victory.

Western Nevada College found the tonics Friday to end a four-game road losing: a prolific first inning and one tough out in Kody Reynolds. The Wildcats scored four times in the first en route to an 11-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, Colo.

Western Nevada College Softball plays host to the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College this weekend for a four game series at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. The Wildcats came away from Friday's doubleheader, topping CNCC 8-0 and 11-3.

Although Western Nevada College came away empty in its four-game series with second-ranked Salt Lake Community College on Saturday, the Wildcats demonstrated that their program isn't that far behind one of the nation's best.

Elisha Jahnke one-hit WNC over the first six innings of the opener and the Bruins scored five runs in the middle innings to win 6-1 in Taylorsville, Utah. Jahnke, Baylee Reeves and Lauren Frailey combined on a four-hitter and Raeana Gall knocked in four runs as the Bruins completed the four-game sweep with a 7-1 second-game victory.

A two-out, seventh-inning rally was just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday at Cate Field in West Jordan, Utah.

Kody Reynolds and DJ Peters hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh inning to put the Wildcats of Carson City in front 5-4. However, Salt Lake Community College delivered a two-out rally of its own in the ninth inning to pull out a 6-5 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory.

The road certainly hasn't been kind to the Western Nevada College baseball team. After a difficult 11-6 loss to Salt Lake on Thursday, a game in which the Wildcats led 6-1 in the seventh inning, WNC didn't take advantage of a three-hitter by sophomore right-hander Max Karnos on Friday.

Western Nevada College's losing softball record certainly can be deceiving. The Wildcats gave second-ranked Salt Lake Community College all it wanted in their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at Bruin Field in Taylorsville, Utah.

Salt Lake held off WNC, 7-4, in game two after struggling to a 5-2 victory in the opener. With the sweep, Salt Lake remained in first place in the SWAC at 22-4.

Zac Willis doubled in two runs in the seventh inning and tripled in two more runs in the eighth as Salt Lake City Community College rallied to an 11-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday at Cate Field in West Jordan.

With four Wildcats supplying at least two hits, WNC staked freshman pitcher Matt Young to a 6-1 lead through six innings.

Home runs and dominant pitching in the circle propelled fourth-ranked College of Southern Idaho to 12-1 and 12-4 softball victories over Western Nevada College on Saturday in Twin Falls, completing a four-game sweep of the Wildcats.

CSI blasted three home runs that brought home eight of its 12 runs to win the opener in five innings. Kami Merrill (15-3), a sophomore right-hander from Calgary, Alberta, limited the Wildcats to two hits.

Patience and persistence paid big dividends for the Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Struggling to score runs in the first three games of their Scenic West Athletic Conference series with College of Southern Idaho, the Wildcats scored seven runs in the fifth through seventh innings to pull away to an 8-0 seven-inning victory.

With three losses by two runs or less in two days, the Western Nevada College softball team didn't have much to show for a well-played softball series at rival College of Southern Nevada.

The Coyotes rallied from a three-run deficit to complete a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats on Saturday in Henderson. Rebekka Gross' solo homer — the Coyotes' third of the game — was the difference as CSN won the second game, 5-4. CSN took the opening game, 6-4, holding off a late charge by the Wildcats of Carson City.

Phil Bickford and his history of being a top-10 selection in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft didn't intimidate Western Nevada College hitters on Saturday in Carson City.
In fact, the Wildcats touched up the right-hander for two hits and a run before fans had completely settled into their seats at John L. Harvey Field.

The Wildcats plated two fifth-inning runs to tie the score and then tallied five runs after two were out in the sixth to pull out a 9-4 baseball victory to gain a doubleheader split at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Three late-inning errors snapped a tie and sent College of Southern Nevada to a 5-2 series-opening baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday in Carson City.

The win pulled the Coyotes (8-5) within one game of the first-place Wildcats (9-4) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. CSN ace Phil Bickford, the 10th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball amateur draft, is scheduled to pitch the opening game of Friday's doubleheader set for noon at John L. Harvey Field.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

The start of a pivotal Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball series between first-place Western Nevada College and second-place College of Southern Nevada begins Thursday, one day earlier than originally scheduled.

The four-game series begins at 4 p.m. Thursday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City. On Friday, the teams will play at doubleheader at noon and then conclude the series with a single game at noon Saturday.
