CARSON CITY — The Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation is the recipient of a nearly $14 million federal grant to support short-term job training programs to help prepare unemployed and underemployed individuals for in-demand occupations in Nevada, Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Friday.

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to help us celebrate National Public Lands Day through this fun, hands-on restoration event.

Free Citizenship Preparation Classes offered by Truckee Meadows Community College and Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada through a grant from USCIS.

Fred Lokken, political science professor at Truckee Meadows Community College, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon. His presentation will highlight his in-depth analysis and astute observations on the political scene in the run-up to the November election, both in Washington DC and here in Nevada.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) reminds residents and visitors that recreational fires, including campfires, bonfires, warming fires, wood fires, charcoal fires, or any other kind of outdoor fires, involving solid fuels are not permitted on public or private property including residential properties, vacation/short-term rentals, campgrounds, resorts and other recreational areas throughout the Lake Tahoe/Truckee Region until the end of November or until rescinded.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. The Carson Canyon Railbike Tours will run four times over the next three days, bringing excitement unlike any other. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. UPDATE 8:40AM: Resources are on scene of a single tree fire in Washoe Valley west of Bowers Mansion. The #BowersFire is a-quarter of an acre in brush and timber and was caused by lightning in the area, according to the U.S. Forest Service. No structures were threatened, fire officials said.

Step back in time in Virginia City on the scenic Virginia & Truckee Railroad steam train. Ride in the open air cars. Trains depart hourly to the historic Gold Hill ghost town and return.

The Loyalton Fire north of the California, Nevada state line has burned 36,295 acres and is 5 percent contained as of Monday morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire, which is believed to have started by lightning, has destroyed 5 homes and six outbuildings.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Lake Tahoe is the vacation destination for millions of people annually, but recent behaviors by some visitors have several residents on edge. Trash is being left behind on beaches, trails and picnic areas, overflowing trash containers, which are shown up daily on social media pages, along with packed stores and clogged roads.

Hello fellow anglers, It has been so dang hot that not many have been out fishing lately. With all of this heat, a couple reminders to those that venture outdoors: Beware of the rattlesnakes while you're hiking to that favorite fishing hole. Rattlesnakes are not just in the Carson Valley area, they can be found all the way up through the sierras high up as Kinney reservoir. So watch your step.

Three-term chair of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Norm Harry died this week. He was 65.

Harry was an advocate for tribal water rights, and he was instrumental in getting the Truckee River Operating Agreement signed. That agreement designated much of the Truckee River waters to the tribe and settled claims among multiple parties for water rights.

Harry was a champion of the land, water and Indigenous people.

UPDATE MONDAY: The Carson City Fire Department responded to assist Truckee Meadows Fire on the #NorthFire. As of Monday morning the fire has burned 3,000 acres and is 0 percent contained. Firefighters worked throughout the night battling this blaze and are back on the fire line this morning, according to CCFD.

Fires burning in the northern California region, including a new fire north of Highway 395 near Hallelujah Junction in Lassen County, Calif., has produced smoky skies throughout much of western Nevada, including Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas.

To accommodate a highly anticipated community mural art project, the Tahoe East Shore Trail will be temporarily closed to public access between the Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor all day on Tuesday, August 4, as well as Wednesday, August 5 through Friday, August 7, after 8:00 p.m.

Retired Army Col. Alvin Bolton of Reno has been named the Nevada National Guard's first chief diversity officer and he will begin his new position in Carson City on July 28.

Each year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on.

Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! However, instead of participants gathering on the banks, this year’s event will be live streamed from the Reno Shelter on August 29 at 12 p.m. and will consist of adorable shelter dogs and cats doing adorable activities.

Construction of Mountain Lakes Estates Retirement Community is nearly complete, and its first residents are expected to move in this fall, said Darryl Fisher, president of Mission Senior Living. The active lifestyle community for adults 55-years-old and better is located at 765 South Meadows Parkway, Reno. Construction began in the spring of 2019.

We are proud to announce the first phase of the Mills Park Pickleball Court conversion project in Carson City is completed. As of Tuesday, July 21, 2020, the courts are open to the public.

This phase consists of four dedicated pickleball courts with permanent nets, installed on the westernmost of the two asphalt-base tennis courts.

Colin West, executive director of Clean Up the Lake, a non-profit organization, along with three other scuba divers will be braving the cold water of Donner Lake in Truckee, Calif. for two weeks in an effort to fight trash pollution that began July 6.
