Man arrested for sex crimes after allegedly luring Carson City teens using social media
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 07/15/2015 - 2:34pmJacob Daniel Houser was arrested July 8 in Fresno, Calif., after a warrant for his arrest was issued July 7. He was extradited and returned Wednesday to Carson City where he faces sex crime charges, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Detective Sal Acosta.
Firefighters serve up Saturday morning Breakfast for Books at Carson City Library
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 06/13/2015 - 8:58amCarson City Library’s Summer Reading Program is getting help this morning from the Carson City Fire Department with a kickoff Breakfast for Books launch in the parking lot of the library. The breakfast runs until 10 a.m. Tickets are $3 and gets you a plate of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and juice.
This year’s program, Every Hero has a Story, will be hosted online, with participants signing up and tracking hours read at the carsoncitylibrary.com website. Each participant will be assigned an avatar. As that avatar progresses with minutes read and logged, prizes are unlocked for literary games, author videos and other rewards.
Pancake breakfast Saturday kicks off Carson City Library summer reading program

“It’s important kids keep reading in the summer so they start off strong in the fall,” said Heather Butler, youth services librarian. “This bridges the gap at the end of the school year.”
Carson City Library to celebrate week leading up to added days
Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/29/2015 - 6:11pmWhen Sam Wilson, 15, heard the Carson City Library was extending its hours to include Sundays beginning in June, he was overjoyed. “That’s exciting news,” he said. “The more they’re open, the more opportunity there is for me to go and learn new technology.”
Wilson, who just completed his freshman year at Carson High School, rides his bike nearly every day to the Carson City Library where he spends his afternoons in the Digitorium doing his homework and surfing the Internet.
Carson Valley teen named National Youth Advocate of the Year by tobacco-free group

Flanders was honored in early May at the annual gala in Washington, D.C. alongside former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and the 2015 winner of the Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence.
Carson area artist hopes to create local works of art

All day long, the CCAI exhibit, Tuscarora, will be visible in the Sierra Room as the Board of Supervisors conduct their meeting. Head over to the Legislature for ‘RenoScapes,’ the final SENarts ‘Works of Artists’ program this season; check out the LXS Exhibit by artist Dawn Dot Star while you are there, it will be changing next week. Teens are invited to learn some acting and improv skills at the Carson City Library this afternoon. Nevada Arts Council Fellowship winners, Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley, will be sharing their poetry and honored at a reception today at Western Nevada College.

Shiner, by promising young playwright Christian Durso, follows two 13-year-olds Jake and Margot, in 1994, who form their own grunge-music fan club to celebrate all things Nirvana. Soon Jake and Margot become bound as much by their shared insecurities as by their music. The two teens make a pact to die happy. All they need to do is see Nirvana live in concert and then they will jump off the 101 overpass.

UNR student secures $10K grant to promote good health at Pyramid Lake High School

Films are either short documentary or mockumentary and are between 1 and 10 minutes long. The event is hosted by the Brewery Arts Center, Wired Wednesday and Carson TV. The crawl is open to everyone, and includes film viewing, specials, entertainment and more.

WNC offers new Spring driver education classes
Submitted by editor on Wed, 01/14/2015 - 12:26pmNew Driver Education courses for teens age 15 and older will be offered by Western Nevada College throughout the spring. Each session includes four days of instruction, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $100.
Three classes will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus Saturdays, Feb. 21-March 14, Monday-Thursday, April 6-9 (Carson High School spring break) and Saturdays, April 18-May 9.

The last days of 2014 in Carson City will be windy, cold with possible snow
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 12/29/2014 - 7:33amUPDATE: While not packing a lot of moisture, a cold storm system is headed our way beginning late Monday, bringing gusty winds, cold temperatures, and the potential for light snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow could begin as early as 8 p.m. Monday night with the main window for snowfall being 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected through the Reno and Carson City areas with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville. 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected west of Highway 95 near Walker Lake.
Cold weather ahead for Carson City and the Sierra through New Year's Day
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 12/27/2014 - 10:24pmA strong cold front will push through the Sierra and northwest Nevada Monday night into Tuesday with overnight lows in the single digits at night to Carson City and Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service. Snow showers could develop along the front, but confidence among forecasters remains low.
Carson City will see a brief warmup Sunday with a high of 45 before temperatures drop below 40 and into the 20s for daytime highs and low teens and single digits at night through Friday.

Though not bone-chilling compared to what’s going on east of the rockies and in the upper midwest, western Nevada will experience cold weather of its own over the next couple days.
A low front diving south will lead to unseasonably cold temperatures through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Some valleys will have low temperatures overnight in the teens or single digits.

The Reno Philharmonic Association’s Free Family Concert and Youth Orchestra Fall Showcase puts the organization’s music education program center stage Nov. 15 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. The concerts are part of the Reno Philharmonics’ education and outreach initiatives, providing music education, enrichment and exposure to thousands of Washoe County and greater Truckee Meadows school children.

Mark Twain Elementary lockdown lifted after juveniles run from officers

Officers are meeting with him and his parents, according to dispatch. He had led officers on a foot pursuit that went through neighborhoods, over fences and through backyards, and briefly led to a lock down at Mark Twain Elementary after the teenager was seen running through the school.
Authorities were called earlier to a business on Long Street after two juveniles were harassing owners and customers. When officers attempted to make contact with the juveniles, they ran.

WNC Offers Fall and Winter Driver Education Courses in Carson City and Douglas County

Two courses will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus on Saturdays, Sept. 20-Oct. 18, or Oct. 18-Nov. 15 (no class Nov. 1, Nevada Day Weekend). A winter break class will be offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, Dec. 29, 30, 31 and Jan. 2. The Carson City classes include four hours on a driving simulator.

Nevada Public Health launches websites to combat sexual violence

The websites, www.preventsexualviolenceNV.org and www.stepupstopviolence.org, define sexual assault and consent and offer approaches for individuals, students, and community members to safely intervene when observing a potentially high-risk situation.
