Fleischmann Planetarium hosts stellar space show lineup through Spring

Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno hosts several breathtaking immersive theater experiences this sping, playing March 30-June 14, 2015. As a science education resource, many of Fleischmann Planetarium’s entertaining shows also correlate with the new K-12 Next-Generation Science Standards (NGSS) adopted by Nevada and California state boards of education. For more about the standards, visit www.nextgenscience.org.

WE CHOOSE SPACE! is for audiences of all ages who dream of space and wonder about human spaceflight after the Space Shuttle! Join Astronauts Scott Parazynski, Tom Jones and Gene Cernan and veteran space reporter Walter Cronkite as your tour guides on an adventure to the International Space Station and to the past and future moon. After production, WE CHOOSE SPACE! was reviewed by NASA scientists and engineers, and includes a robust educational component with demonstrated academic impact. Ultimate Universe will take you on a grand celestial tour from the outer reaches of space through wondrous galaxies to the majesty of our own galaxy. This fulldome show uses the latest 3-D animation technology to reveal the awesome power of the universe and its most provocative secrets. We’ll also see what’s up in the springtime sky in SkyTonight!

Black Holes is back again by popular demand! (Our visitors love this show!) Few mysteries in the universe have the power and awe of the black hole. Only now are we on the verge of understanding their true nature. This new immersive digital theater program incorporates some of the most intense 3-D visual effects ever created on the subject.

Family Show: Larry: Cat in Space (recommended for young children, but fun for all ages!), is a playful cartoon presentation tracing the adventures of a VERY inquisitive cat who takes a stowaway trip to the Moon.

Family Show: Attack of the Space Pirates, with amazing sound effects by George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound, features the Starship Intrepid as it travels through hyperspace in this fun and exciting adventure, where you and the crew will put real science into science fiction and solve numerous challenges along the way. FREE! Weekly Spring Star Party at Redfield Campus! The Fleischmann Planetarium now hosts FREE telescope viewing at the MacLean Observatory on the Redfield Campus at 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno, NV 89511 (in south Reno off the Mount Rose Highway). Please note, this is an outdoor event with no indoor facilities available.
Weekly viewing: Every Friday after dark, weather permitting, through June, 8-10 p.m.

Fleischmann Planetarium is open every day; hours change seasonally. UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.
