Jo Etta Brown, executive vice president of the Alliance for Retired Americans and a senior member of the Nevada Commission for Women, will be the featured speaker at the Martin Luther King Day luncheon sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee of Carson City.

Ms. Brown's presentation will feature a review of Dr. King's legacy as an advocate for peace and social justice, the mostly forgotten story of Nevada as "the Mississippi of the West," and the little-known history of African Americans in Carson City and Carson Valley.

With home prices rising in many areas of the country, many people are worried that we’re headed for a housing crash like the one we suffered in 2008.

But here’s the thing: it’s just not true. While it’s understandable that people would look at the current market, consider it a “housing bubble,” and assume it’s going to pop, the truth of the matter is the market today couldn’t be any more different than they were before the crash of 2008.

Let’s look at four reasons why we’re not headed for another housing crash:

WNC is providing two different one-day sessions of the required Healthcare Provider CPR (EMS 100) class prior to spring semester. This course also is a prerequisite for admission into the nursing program.

The CPR classes will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 19. Both sessions will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CARSON CITY — Eagle Valley Middle School went ‘dough to dough’ in the Parent Teacher Organization’s annual cookie dough fundraiser. In total, the gross sales were equivalent to more than $23,000. The school earns about 40 percent of total gross sales, bringing the net total to $9,200. A total of 1,547 units were sold.

The Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, also known as POST, will hold a ceremony Nov. 15 for 21 graduates from 14 Nevada agencies who will accept their peace officers’ oath as POST Academy Class of 2018-02.

Mr. Roerink will be making final arguments in favor of Question 6, the Renewable Energy Standards Initiative, and will be prepared to field questions on the future of renewable energy in Nevada.

CARSON CITY — Did you know that Nevada Day is the largest celebration of statehood in the nation? Nevada Day is more than an extraordinary parade, it is Nevada’s heritage celebration – a gathering of communities to salute our State’s past and embrace its future.

A new medical marijuana indoor grow facility is in its final stages of planning, and if it is approved, would be built at 5700 Morgan Mill Road in East Carson City.

Indoor Garden Farms, LLC, has applied for a Special Use Permit from the Carson City Planning Commission to construct a building used to cultivate and produce marijuana for the State of Nevada.

Question 6 in the coming election asks whether Nevada’s Constitution shall be amended to require that, beginning in 2022, all Nevada sellers of retail electricity increase the amount of “renewable” energy resources they use so that at least 50 percent of their electricity comes from those resources by 2030.

We have long supported increasing diversity in energy supplies via economic development of renewables. But the mandates proposed by Question 6 are a big mistake and we strongly counsel voting against it.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has proclaimed Oct. 2-5, 2018 the “Week of Respect.” In tow with the proclamation, the Carson City School District’s superintendent has made a Pledge of Achievement to ensure consistent implementation of anti-bullying programs and practices in all schools and work environments.

On Nov. 6, Nevadans will face the final question on the ballot, Question 6. If adopted, electric utility companies would be required to acquire 50 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2030.

Yerington High School in Lyon County has been named one of 31 Shining Star schools recognized by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) for achieving four- and five-star status while also serving a high percentage of students in poverty.

All new, more rigorous school star ratings are showing Nevada's students making academic progress. Carson City's Pioneer High School has qualified to receive extra funding as a "Rising Star School," to help improve graduation and testing rates.
