Column: D-Day a turning point in history

Seventy-two years ago today, the largest seaborne invasion force the world had ever seen landed on the shores of Northern France, both making and changing history at the same time.

D-Day, June 6, 1944, was the beginning of the end of Nazi rule across Europe.

Column: Reflections of a former foster parent

I recently wrote an article about child welfare needs in Carson City. This included the shortage of foster homes here in the Nevada state capital.

My wife, Lisa, and I were foster-to-adopt parents through the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for a few years. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the need for people to step up and open their hearts and homes to foster children is critical.

But making a commitment as heavy as this requires preparation on multiple levels.

Carson City scavenger hunt among events statewide to mark 50th year of National Preservation Act

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Recognition deserved: Carson City dispatch navigates critical information around the clock

They’re always at the other end of the line, the lifeline between those who have emergencies and the first responders. They are rooted at the very center, disseminating information as it comes in. Their work is absolutely essential because every second counts.

Column: Vietnam Veterans are loved

I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

A lifesaving journey for 'Carson the Cat' found on the side of the road in Carson City

Lifesaving at Nevada Humane Society doesn’t stop; in fact, more often than not, multiple animals are in need of special surgeries all at the same time. Recently, Donner the puppy made headlines and is currently recovering from surgery. Today, Carson the cat is beginning his journey, and, just like Donner’s did, it begins with a rough start.

Local dental program helps Carson City vets smile proud

As the old saying goes, "when opportunity knocks, answer the door."

Randy Wright, DDS of Advanced Dentistry by Design in Carson City had little idea who or what was knocking on the other side of his door, let alone the impact he would have, when he answered it in late 2015.

Care Flight Community Advisor

Often, individuals misdiagnose themselves while having a stroke and do not get the proper treatment due to the fact they do not visit a hospital. This can lead to severe permanent damage to a person’s brain. Care Flight would like to remind people of some important facts about stroke.

Donations help local foster children

To a child placed in foster care, the world can be a cold, foreboding, lonely place. But thanks to donations from some local businesses, foster children in Carson City can find some comfort in a scary situation.

In December, the Carson City district office for the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) received donations from Carson-Tahoe Health and Kassity Management Group designed to help make the difficult transition into foster care a little bit easier for children.

Nevada Humane Society column: Petco Foundation grant a blessing this holiday season

Many of you may not know this but prior to arriving at the Nevada Humane Society, I was a producer at a local news station. That basically means I was responsible for putting content on the air.

Our biggest struggle was always that so many people didn’t want to hear the bad things, yet they wanted to know if something was awry in their neighborhood. It was my job to give them that information. However, there’s also “fluffy” news which is that of happy, lighthearted content, and a “kicker” which is the uplifting or funny story that is typically aired at the end of the newscast.

Each year, Nevada Humane Society sets aside time to pay tribute to the pets in our lives, past and present. The holiday season is a time to show our animal companions how much they mean to us, and our annual Lights of Love is a touching way to do just that.

Never Forget: Carson City law officers gather at dawn to remember attack on Pentagon

I stopped by this morning at the 9/11 memorial in Mills Park so I could be there at 6:37 a.m., the Carson City time in which the Pentagon was hit. These law enforcement officers were there and it made me smile knowing that we have such a great group of officers working here in Carson City. I candidly took this picture. Respect. This is part of my life (everyone's really) where everything changed.
