The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Keep reading: there’s something for everyone this weekend.

Photos: Law Enforcement Torch Run golf tourney raises $2,200 for Special Olympians

Sunday was a day for law enforcement and Special Olympians as they teamed together at Silver Oak Golf Course to raise $2,200 for local athletic programs.

Nevada Department of Corrections Officer Tony Cloke notes the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraiser has been carried between Peace officers and Special Olympians in Nevada for more than 30 years.

Coffee with Congressman Mark Amodei scheduled Wednesday

Congressman Mark Amodei, now on congressional break, will be addressing members of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and interested community members at a special coffee session scheduled at 8 a.m. Wednesday, August 24 at the Silver Oak Golf Executive Conference Center.

Carson City Host Lions Club Golf Event at Silver Oak

The Carson City Host Lions Club held its inaugural Pitch, Putt and Sip recently at Silver Oak Golf Course. It was a successful event made possible by General Manager Terrie McNutt and PGA Pro Robert Mason along with their staff.

This golf event was a social event and not a competitive links style tournament. There were 44 people who participated in the creative golf tournament. There were three teams that won first, second and third place.

Take the kids to the Nevada State State Train Museum for Lucky Diamond and the Gents of Jive or to the McFadden Plaza for an outdoor concert with Musicole. Leave the kids with a sitter if you’re going to head to Living the Good Life for some outdoor fun with CV-41 or inside the Westside Pour House with reggae group Whiskey Lung. A to Zen has a store-wide scavenger hunt to accompany their weekly open Mic.

Silver Oak to hold Special Olympics benefit golf tournament in Carson City

Nevada law enforcement officers love their state's Special Olympians, and the athletes love their officers.

Fourth Annual Wounded Veterans Tournament Sept. 3

4th Annual Wounded Veterans Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. Registration is $95 per person and includes refreshments in the morning, a BBQ lunch, golf, and more.

Register for the four-person scramble at 7:30am; shotgun start is at 8:30am.

Fifteen days of non-stop music begins tonight at the Bliss Mansion with the Jazz and Beyond Garden Party; don’t miss out on the fabulous art show, tours of the historic home, and great jams. Downtown will be rocking tonight as the Carson High Class of 86 celebrates their reunion in Telegraph Square with two live bands. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Just down the street, Living the Good Life welcomes Southbound Train followed by DJ Bobby G. Fuji Park is the place to be for cowboys, broncs, and a great concert celebrating Carson City.

Living in the dusty, dry high desert means that we escape cancerous car rot. Additionally, it’s probably the reason that Northern Nevada is a mecca for classic cars and the shows that celebrate them. The Silver Dollar Classic Car Show has long been Carson’s kick off to the hot, melty August nights that follow – the Max Casino is where it all begins. Head to Red’s Old 395 for an appreciation party to those who fight our wild fires and say a hello to Smokey the Bear. Trey Stone makes an appearance at Living the Good Life and Whiskey Tavern welcomes you to their karaoke stage.

Muscle Powered Easy Hike to V&T Trail North

Meet at the trailhead on Murphy Road, off Combs Canyon on the north side. The trail is on the west side near Western Nevada College, overlooking Silver Oak Golf course. Bring water, a friend and/or friendly dogs.

Muscle Powered Easy Hike program are hikes of between 2 to 4 miles in length, often with some elevation gain (no more than 500') and can be on a paved path, smooth wide trail, or single track. The hikes will usually be of approximately 1 1/2 duration.

Signups underway for Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament August 27

Mills Park is home to a carnival for the long weekend, so grab yourself a funnel cake or a spin on the Ferris Wheel tonight until 10 p.m.

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Bike Month is only a third of the way through, but Bike Week in Carson City is coming to a close. For those taking their bike to work today, Comma Coffee and LA Bakery are offering a cup of joe on your way. Pedal your way to the Max Casino for the Grand Opening of the Black Bear Diner; you’re going to need your strength to get through this day full of fun stuff to do. The Nevada State Fair is in full swing and a street dance at the Pavilion starts at 6 p.m.

What a week. Granted, it was a short one, but school got out for the summer and we saw the weather go from a wintery chill to summery hot. Get your early primary vote in this afternoon, then stick around for the Artist Reception for the new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery upstairs in the Courthouse Building. Live music can be found at our bigger casinos, and a dj will keep you on the dance floor at Jimmy G’s, Alatte in the Carson Nugget, and Living the Good Life. Sassafras welcomes Bryan McPherson to the stage at 8 pm; you’ll want to get there earlier to take full advantage of their menu.

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

CHS Culinary Arts fundraiser Thursday at Silver Oak

The Carson High School Culinary Arts program is holding a fundraiser Thursday, March 10, at Silver Oak Golf Course. A no-host bar opens at 5 p.m., and dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person and include dinner, wine, and a silent auction.

Muscled Powered Conditioning Hike to V&T Trail

Meet at the northend off Combs Canyon Road on the west side of Carson City. This a 3.5 mile roundtrip hike along the old railroad bed, overlooking Silver Oak Golf Course. Bring a hiking stick is needed and water is the weather is warm.

It was rainy last night in our valley, but this evening should see some snow. A winter wonderland isn’t always easy to drive in, so please slow down and be careful. Monday always brings karaoke at the Firkin and Fox, so go sing your heart out. Football lovers will probably be watching the Bears-Chargers game. For those of you with swing in your step, head to El Charro Avita for intermediate dance lessons and the High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly ‘night out.’

Let it rain. We enjoyed a perfect Nevada Day weekend: not too cold or hot, and the wind didn’t pick up until long after the floats left the parade route. Halloween was enjoyed by all with trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion, the annual Blinky Man Halloween ride, the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Brewery Arts Center, and costumes galore. It’s time to move into November, though. Daylight savings time has ended and there is talk of snow.
