Nevada Rural Counties RSVP, multiple agencies to host Sept. 8 Veterans Resource Fair

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program and multiple agencies from around Carson City will hold a Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Carson Nugget.

Veterans and their caregivers will be provided with information on services and programs provided by area non-profits, advisory groups, government agencies, and the private sector. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There is absolutely a little bit of everything this weekend. I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Tahoe-based ad agency SJ Marketing uses holiday gifting project to support 4 local non-profits

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Last month, award winning advertising agency SJ Marketing turned its annual client-gift project into a community support campaign, raising more than $1,250 for area non-profits. Proceeds from the campaign, “You’ve Been Givted,” went to four local charities: Awaken Reno, a human trafficking awareness organization; PetNetwork, a Tahoe-based animal shelter; Families for Early Autism Treatment (FEAT), a local grassroots effort; and the Reno-Tahoe area Meals on Wheels organization.

Nevada ‘Talking Books’ collection gives voice to written word

Brett Silver is a voracious reader, and he has been since childhood. He’s also legally blind. “My grandma was a retired school teacher,” he said. “She made sure I got my own kind of library.”

She discovered the Talking Books program at the Nevada State Library and Archives and introduced it to her grandson.

Since 1999 this group has been working to meet the needs of those with limited financial resources who are home bound or in care centers with little or no family nearby. Each year 150 - 200 visits are averaged in the Carson City area!

Children are naturally willing to take risks. We can easily recognize this as they tackle the playground, go down the largest slide, jump from the highest point, and show off their abilities to their parents. Many times they will fall as they are learning to walk, and with determination, they will keep getting back up for their next attempt.
