SILVER SPRINGS, NEV — The Silver Stage Task Force is organizing its annual Wellness Fair featuring free health services, samples, and live entertainment for May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This big rural fair is designed to help residents shop around for the best information on health and wellness with over 40 booths.
The completely free community event is open to everyone, and promotes the full spectrum of wellness, from good nutrition, gardening, and fitness to preventative health care and treatment to volunteer, arts and educational opportunities.

News Release — The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Nevada Department of Public Safety — Division of Emergency Management (DPS-DEM) are collectively working to address the public’s concerns surrounding the potential impact to the State of Nevada and the rest of the United States from the Japanese nuclear reactor crisis.

Eric Matus, Radiation Physicist for the Nevada State Health Division, has compiled an overview of information addressing the concerns and speculation that continue to linger.

Many women in rural Nevada have never had a mammogram. Fear, lack of funds, transportation conflicts, or no insurance are the main reasons women have not protected their health with this breast cancer screening process. Yet, we know that early detection of breast cancer saves lives.

The Mammovan will be visiting two Carson City locations on March 21-22 and will offer mammograms to geographically isolated and uninsured women. Through the kind support of several organizations, mammograms will be available by appointment, for age and income eligible, at no charge.

"The Tourist," currently screening at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is rich in scenery (Paris and Venice, how could you go wrong?), in female beauty (Angelina Jolie, again how could you go wrong?) and the usual befuddled but caring male (Johnny Depp).

It is not rich in a plot that makes a lot of sense, but it's a thriller so does that matter? I guess not if you're content to sit and let events wash over you and Jolie is good at that.

At least 24 million people in the U.S. struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The good news is that millions in recovery stand as evidence that there is hope – people can stop using, reconnect with family, and go on to productive, happy lives. The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is one group promoting the fact that recovery is possible, prevention works and treatment is effective.

Christy McGill likes to use a gardening metaphor when she explains Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey's mission to reduce substance abuse and promote recovery.

“The Coalition is planting the seeds of hope that alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover,” said McGill, who serves as director.

Nineteen South Lake Tahoe area non-profit organizations got an early holiday surprise Thursday when more than $100,000 was delivered by LIVESTRONG and the American Century Championship.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board of directors announced the distribution of $102,377 in contributions on Thursday, Nov. 11.

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is celebrating the month by “planting the seeds of hope” that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover.

Law enforcement personnel from 4 northern Nevada agencies conducted a DUI checkpoint on State Road 445 (Pyramid Highway) near Egyptian Drive in Spanish Springs yesterday afternoon. Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, police officers from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments and troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol participated in the “Joining Forces” holiday weekend administrative roadblock from 1:30 pm – 7:30 pm. During the 6-hour event, 1008 vehicles were screened with 22 of those directed into the secondary screening area.

A screening of the public television documentary "Liquid Assets: The Story of Our Water Infrastructure" will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday May, 20 in the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St, Carson City. The event will be hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Capital Branch.

The screening will be followed by a community discussion with Mark Brethauer P.E., a Senior Project Manager with Carson City Public Works. The event is free and open to the public.
