Bepsy Strasburg was out running errands Friday afternoon when she stopped by the Carson City Library. While there, she took a trip around the world and through time and space — visiting a family in India, walking with dinosaurs and tripping through the stars — with the help of virtual reality.

The Preacher Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains has swelled to more than 1,000 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Douglas County has initiated recommended evacauations of areas at the east end of Pine Nut Road including Fred’s Street, Sandoval, Taildragger, Bluebird, and Bar-J Roads as well as the Spirit Ranch Area including Blue Sage Road, Badger Lane, Robinson Road, and Lena Lane. In addition, the Washoe Tribal Police are evacuating the Bodie Flats area in the vicinity of Courtland Avenue.

Plow crews continue to clear seasonally closed Sierra passes, some opening dates projected

Snow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed through winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in these areas. U.S. 50 near Cave Rock Update

While there is no estimated time of reopening the roadway, the Nevada Department of Transportation continues to make progress removing monolithic-size boulders which fell onto U.S. 50 north of the Cave Rock area of Lake Tahoe.

Tree uproots in Dayton, Lyon County prepares for more flooding overnight

Lyon County Manager Jeff Page provides this photo of a tree that fell due to high winds in Dayton near the Subway. The Lyon County Road Department reports Route 95A between Yerington and Schurz is reopening as well as connecting roads. Rain is falling in the Virginia and Pinenut Ranges and Lyon County is preparing for additional flood issues throughout the county.

Unburied: Road around Lake Tahoe's iconic Emerald Bay reopens

State Route 89 from D.L. Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay State Park at Lake Tahoe is now open. Caltrans crews had been working for weeks to clear debris and snow off the road which links South Lake Tahoe to the North Shore via the west side of the lake.

NDOT moves quickly with flood-related road repair contracts

CARSON CITY, Nev. – In just the first days after several northwestern Nevada state roads were damaged by flooding, the Nevada Department of Transportation has let out emergency contracts and contractors are already being dispatched to repair erosion and other flood-related roadway damage. The repairs follow tours of the damage taken by Governor Sandoval and local officials both before and after the flood.

Mystique Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Carson City closes

Mystique Restaurant and Lounge, located at 318 N. Carson Street downtown, has closed permanently, owner Yvette Barrett said Tuesday.

The restaurant closed Saturday, Jan. 7, she said, and will not reopen.

NDOT: Sinkhole forces closure for 'coming weeks' of Kingsbury Grade valley side

State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade from the summit down to the Carson Valley floor will be closed to traffic "through the coming weeks" due to a sinkhole caused by an eroding drainage pipe under the roadway, the Nevada Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

Nevada Day Store to reopen inside Carson City Visitors Bureau

Fire Chief: Carson City experiencing localized flooding, sandbags available

Localized flooding is being experienced throughout much of Carson City as a winter storm continues to bring drenching rain to not only western Nevada but the Sierra.

Carson City Fire Chief and Emergency Manager Bob Schreihans notes that minor street flooding, mud and debris have been the result of the arrival of an "Atmospheric River" type storm, which started early this morning in the Sierra and Western Nevada.
