The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will be hosting March's Full Moon Hike up Dead Truck Canyon on Prison Hill on Monday, March 9. This hike will feature the "Worm Moon," an abandoned 1950's truck and plenty of beautiful terrain.

Happy Saturday Carson City! It’s caucus day, are you ready to vote if you are so inclined? Here are some events to do after/instead throughout the Carson City region!

Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. Rumors about a potential outbreak of dog lice in two Carson City dog parks went through social media last week and early this week, but according to David Navarro, Parks Operation Superintendent for Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, those rumors are unsubstantiated.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is having a Cottonwood Wrapping volunteer event! We will be installing mesh wire around the base of Cottonwood trees to protect them from being damaged by beavers.

We’ve got a bunch of great events in the region through the weekend, so check below!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

The Fuji Park playground adjacent to the Fuji Park Dog Park has been closed due to repairs, according to David Navarro, Parks Operations Superintendent from the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, and is set to be reopened sometime in March, although the time frame is dependent on an order of new parts for the playground.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host its February Full Moon Hike this Saturday on the South end of Prison Hill. The hike will be a glow stick adventure featuring the "Snow Moon," Ghost Rock and plenty of beautiful terrain.

Carson City is at the center of a legal dispute following its refusal to allow hemp to be grown on property in the Buzzys Ranch area in East Carson City. Tahoe Hemp is suing for $15 million in damages citing the city broke its agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust, which gives rights to the family to use the property for agricultural purposes.

Carson City area citizens spent their MLK Day in the canyons near East Silver Saddle Ranch cleaning up dumpsites. In total, more than 50 volunteers removed 7,080 pounds of trash from the natural area. Items of all kinds were taken out of the canyons including plastic bottles, tires, yard trimmings, toys, and even kitchen sinks.

The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range will be closed for construction starting Jan. 27, 2020. For safety reasons, all shooting activities, including reservations and public use, are canceled during construction. The construction schedule is anticipated to last approximately 10 weeks, although it will be contingent on weather conditions.

Heading into Monday and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday we're looking at cloudy skies with a daytime high around 50 degrees. City, state and federal offices are closed as are schools. Friends of the Carson City Library's Browser's Book Store at 711 East Washington St., is open from noon to 5 p.m. Activities around the capital city include a canyon area cleanup hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, swing dance lessons and more. Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Combined with live music at Bella Vita Bistro, there’s plenty to do and see around the state capitol. Read on for more.

Heading into Thursday, today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Across the country on January 9 each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. Thank you law enforcement. In other happenings, events are lined up throughout the day including art showings, an open invitation to a meeting of the Carson City Natives and Newcomers Club, A Prison Hill open space planning open house hosted by Parks and Rec, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, the Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host January's Full Moon Hike on the Wild Horse Trail this Friday, Jan. 10. Not only will the hike feature some wild horses and the "Wolf Moon" it will also be a celebration of Carson City's first Winter Trails Day.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department host an open house to discuss planning efforts for the 2,500-acre Prison Hill Recreation Area and adjacent properties.

The proposed Andersen Ranch Estates neighborhood project was the hot topic during the Carson City Planning Commission meeting Tuesday night, with the commission recommending approval of the project map with a 4-2 vote with 1 vote absent.

The countdown to Christmas is on as we head into the first day of the work week. Events around the capital city Monday include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, the first day kickoff of a Holiday Gift Making Camp at the Brewery Arts Center, a Carson River Trails Project open house hosted by Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a Carson City Democratic luncheon featuring a Bernie Sanders campaign presentation, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more.

The inaugural three-night Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch, hosted by the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, continues through Sunday evening, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday, December 14

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

This Friday through Sunday, Dec. 13-15, the first Homestead Holidays at Silver Saddle Ranch, hosted by the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, will be bringing a free family event to the community with some good old-fashioned Christmas charm.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host an open house for the Carson River Trails Phase II Project.

The project is funded by a grant from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA), which will construct a non-motorized multi-use pathway on the east side of Prison Hill, through Silver Saddle Ranch, and along the Carson River through Buzzy’s Ranch connecting to Riverview Park.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to the inaugural Homestead Holidays event at Silver Saddle Ranch, Dec. 13-15, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night. Homestead Holidays is intended to be an old-fashioned holiday celebration with handcrafted decorations, holiday lights ornamenting historic ranch buildings, and family activities for all ages.

Carson Now has partnered with Carson City's Parks, Recreation and Open Space's first annual "Homestead Holidays" to offer a Letters to Santa writing campaign.

Download your Letters to Santa form from Carson Now, and you can send it off to the big man at the magical North Pole mailbox, which will be available for letters during the Homestead Holidays celebration Dec. 13-15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City.

The gate on Ash Canyon Road, located at the trailhead to the Ash to Kings Trail in Ash Canyon is now closed, according to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space.

Jacob Budd's Eagle Scout service project to improve and make repairs at Carson River Park took place Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019. Jacob worked closely with Gregg Berggren of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, to plan and carry out this project.

While it isn't quite Christmas-weather yet, I'm assuming at some point it will get cold and we can finally get into the upcoming holiday spirit! When that time comes, there are a ton of great Santa-related events going on in Carson City for you and the little ones to enjoy.
