October in Northern Nevada means more than Nevada Day. There are also outhouse races, fall festivals and Oktoberfests; all three of which are happening this first weekend of October around the region.

Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City will celebrate its 26th Annual Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s event will feature an amazing array of raffle prizes, dunk tank, craft fair, silent auction, cake walk, carnival games, Bouncy Castles, prizes, food, bake sale, Nevada-grown pumpkins, wagon rides, juggling demonstrations and lots of family fun. Celebrate Fall with a genuine Carson City tradition. The school is located at 2800 Saliman Road.

According to the calendar, summer is coming to a close but South Lake Tahoe is refusing to acknowledge it. Tahoe South will host a magnitude of events extending the season from Labor Day into October with entertainment, culinary festivals, music, outdoor recreation, competitions and a lakefront laser show.

CARSON CITY — More than 115 Carson High School Career and Technical Education, Health Occupations Students of America shined in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nev. last month. More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Chances are, you’ll need to recover from yesterday a little. Downtown Carson City has you covered with a ‘Sunday, Bloody Mary Sunday’ bloody mary contest in Arlington Square. Get your trick-or-treat on at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada or at the historic Wungnema House at the east end of Mills Park. Grand Entrance at the La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow begins at 12 p.m. Its new home at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center (MAC) has let the annual event become even bigger. You’ve got one last chance to get your fill of cotton candy and the Ferris Wheel: the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival closes at 8 p.m.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Nevada Day is just around the corner, but don’t jump the gun. This weekend offers fun for the young and young-at-heart. If you’ve got more apples than you know what to do with, the Greenhouse Garden Center has a cider press available today. Play BINGO for a good cause at the Carson City Senior Center, and don’t forget your costume. Carson City Symphony Association begins their 34th Season today with a concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater; as always, those under 18 get free admission.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City hosts its second Harvest Train weekend this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22, with steam train rides, a pumpkin patch, craft fair and food trucks.

It’s a roller derby kind of day. Catch the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson City Community Center as they scrimmage to raise funds for Moms on the Run. You’ve still got plenty of pumpkin opportunities with the Nevada Railroad Museum’s Harvest Train or the Corley Ranch Harvest Festival in Gardnerville. It’s a classic whodunnit on the big screen. Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

CARSON CITY — October means the harvest moon and at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it means the Harvest Train. The museum is hosting its third annual Harvest Train over two weekends in October, with steam train rides, a pumpkin patch, craft fair and food trucks.

It might be a blustery Sunday, but the snow isn’t falling yet so enjoy what’s left of our Indian Summer. Whatever you couldn’t cram into Saturday is probably still around: the Aviation Round-up, Italian Festival, and the Outhouse races are still going strong. Don’t miss out on the last-of-the-season Farmers Market at Third and Curry, stock up on local honey and load your basket with yummy stuff. Carson High School Career and Technology Education Health Occupation Student Association Future Health Professionals, a career and technical student organization, is sending 29 students to the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., June 20-25. The students will represent CHS, as well as the Carson City community and the state of Nevada in various medical competitions.

After an action-packed Nevada Day Saturday, Sunday traditions carry on, such as the 35th Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the Carson Colony gym. Take the kids up to Virginia City for one last chance to catch Thomas the Tank Engine at the V & T Depot. It may be a little rainy, but the show must go on at the NV Day Carnival and Festival at Mills Park.

Happy Birthday Nevada. My favorite holiday has arrived, and with it a mountain of fun to be had. Normally my weekend list is sorted by chronological start time, but for this one I will be separating out the downtown parade related activities for your ease. I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.
