Children splashed through streaming fountains of water Saturday morning to break in the newly completed Bob McFadden Plaza, located on the old Third Street section between Carson and Curry streets.

The annual Silver Dollar Classic Car Show kicked off Thursday and continued Friday night at The Max Casino on S. Carson Street.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

SATURDAY:

Carson City celebrates the opening of Bob McFadden Plaza, located on Third Street between Carson and Curry Streets this Saturday, July 30 with a full schedule of events. Proceeds from the celebration will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

All summer long, Thursday nights have been known for the Silver Dollar Classic Car meet-ups with upwards of 80 vehicles showing off their chrome and fuzzy dice at various venues throughout the valley. This Thursday’s cruise night kicks off a weekend of nostalgic car fun. Head to the Plaza Events Center at 5 p.m. for the annual Cruise Night Show and Shine, Music and Spirits and hold onto your bobby sox.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. The Senior Follies have taken over the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater. Kids won’t want to miss the Capitol City Triathlon: swim, bike, and run your way to the winner’s circle. Celebrate community at the second annual Sassabration and don't forget your bathing suit: the Carson Hot Springs will be free from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Find a feline friend at the Nevada Humane Society’s free adoption weekend. Monday’s aren’t always known for fun, but the Fourth of July is a different animal. Carson City, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, and Reno will have fireworks displays starting around 9:30. Minden, Gardnerville, and Genoa aren’t slacking, though. Festivities can be found just about everywhere.

Sunday is the day before Independence Day, but Sparks is getting a jump on the festivities with their Star Spangled Sparks Celebration and fireworks. King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on as well, so grab the kids, friends, and family and have a great Independence Day weekend!

Happy Fathers’ Day Carson City. The Reno Rodeo is a great way to spend the day with your progeny. The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

Blustery Nevada winds tested the mettle of temporary shelters set up on the tarmac at the Carson City Airport's annual Open House event Saturday, but they did not deter a large crowd of morning visitors who came to partake in the festivities.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Aviation and aerospace displays, historic aircraft, formation fliers, hot air balloon rides, a pancake breakfast and more will be featured this Saturday at the Carson City Airport Open House.

With well over 6,000 visitors attending last year, this year’s event is expected will be bigger with a bevy of activities including interactive displays, flybys, plane and helicopter demonstrations, drone demonstrations, food and beverages, a bounce house and many family activities.

The Dayton Valley Days Committee invites crafters, vendors and anyone who wants to reach thousands of people to reserve a booth for the 28th annual street festival held in the heart of historic Old Town Dayton.

Let’s go to the Fair, Carson City. Mills Park is hopping with activity: a carnival, car show, exhibits, music, and a return of the Rendezvous. If you have kids, don’t miss this month’s Young Eagle Flights at the Carson Airport, just make sure to sign up by 8 a.m. Start your day at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, and don’t forget to make your artistic mark on a handcrafted bowl for the Empty Bowls event. You can probably take ‘beach day’ off of your agenda. Spring has been briefly usurped by a blustery chill. Grab a coat and hit the town anyway. The early spring farmers market downtown, the Cops and Kids event at the Sheriff’s Department, and the Annual Relay for Life at Mills Park are still a good time. Much love to the Mothers in our valley, and those that we love like Mothers. Treat that special lady to a day at the Carson Hot Springs. She gets to ride free with a child at the RSVP Spring Carnival. Travel to Virginia City and back on the historic Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Brunch, bingo, and BMX racing are just a few of the other things that Sunday has to offer.

SUNDAY: Mother’s Day

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. You’ll find the softball double-header at Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds; baseball is played at the Harvey Field at Western Nevada College. Sundays can be lazy, but with this list of things to do, they needn’t be. BMX Racing has returned for the season and can be found at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds. What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.

Let someone else take care of Sunday breakfast. The Elks Club throws open its doors for their monthly pancake breakfast which runs today, Sunday, until 11 a.m.
Challenge someone to a mini tournament during Carson Lanes Breakfast and Bowl. You will not want to miss this month’s CASI Bingo day at the Senior Center. Someone will walk away with $1000. Let the Tibetan Monks teach you inner-peace at the Brewery Arts Center. Two workshops today are offered as part of the Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour.

This beautiful weather is no April Fool’s joke, so get out and enjoy the sunshine. Ascent Runs begins their half marathon series today with a race through Carson Canyons, and it is sure to get your heart pumping. The Downtown Business Association wants to see you at today’s wine walk. Once you’re around Telegraph Street, you’ll see some throwbacks from a by-gone era courtesy of Naughty Tea Mistresses, the First Nevada Cavalry, and more.

The spring thaw has arrived, and my event list is getting longer. Carson City has some fun stuff happening this weekend, so please take a look. If you haven’t made it to see Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Disney’s The Aristocats, Kids, or the Carson High spring musical, ‘Kiss Me, Kate.’ what are you waiting for? Keep your eyes peeled for Girl Scouts, this is the last weekend of cookie sales.

Let someone else take care of Sunday breakfast. The Elks Club’s monthly pancake breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m., but they’ll start serving bloody marys at 7 a.m. if you need some hair of the dog. Go for a strike at Carson Lanes with their Breakfast and Bowl special. The Capital City Community Band welcomes area elementary school choirs onstage during today’s free concert, A Salute to Young Musicians, at the Community Center.

Got kids? The Boys and Girls Club is where you want to be today for the Second Annual Early Childhood Expo. Curious George and Clifford the big red dog can’t wait to say hello. Take a trip out to the Dayton State Park to search for animal tracks and more with a park ranger. If you’re kid free today, then the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk is for you. The young and the young-at-heart will find something fun to do this weekend: just check out the whole list for your options and hit the town.

Celebrate the Asian New Year with crafts and music at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Are you ready for some football? Maybe you’re just a fan of the commercials. Either way, today is the big game between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. For those who aren’t a pigskin fan, consider playing a few rounds of bingo to benefit the Carson Animal Shelter Initiative.
