Art on the Porch Set for Friday to launch Carson City Jazz and Beyond Festival

Carson City, Nevada — To help launch the annual citywide Jazz & Beyond Festival, Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art at the Bliss Mansion prior to the 6:30 p.m. main concert. The art sale will take place Friday, August 5 from 4-6:30 p.m. on the porch, 608 Elizabeth Street, Carson City. The free events include art for sale, music, food, and a lovely home and garden to tour. The public is cordially invited.

Carson City Fire Department responds to tree branches sparking transformer fire

Carson City Fire Department crews were called early Friday morning to a series of power line transformer fires.
Crews responded at around midnight to Kansas and Utah streets and Kenny Way after dispatch received several 911 calls about blown transformers and power lines on fire.

Power outage affects hundreds of NV Energy customers in East Carson City

UPDATE 6:10PM: NV Energy reports power has been restored to the areas affected by Friday's outages in Carson City.

UPDATE 5:30PM: Power has been restored to customers in both affected areas of N. Lompa Lane near the Highway 50 East corridor, according to NV Energy.
However, another power outage was reported at 5:14 p.m. around an apartment complex off Airport Road near Woodside Drive. The outage was also due to equipment failure, NV Energy reported.

Power outage impacts hundreds in east Carson City

Nearly 400 customers along the Highway 50 East corridor near N. Lompa Lane are still without power from an outage that occcurred early Friday morning.

Carson City sheriff says wave of telephone scammers targeting locals and businesses

An increase this month in telephone scammers targeting locals and businesses has prompted Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong to issue a warning to all citizens not to be taken in by the thieves.

"Whether they say they're from NV Energy, the gas company, the IRS or other utilities, don't be fooled. Don't fall prey to these scammers," said Furlong.

NV Energy customers to see slight decrease in electric rates beginning Friday

Beginning Friday, NV Energy northern Nevada residential, commercial and industrial electric customers will experience another overall electric rate decrease of 1.97 percent. Since March 2015, the utility says it has made cuts to electric bills averaging 16.9 percent.

Fire crews battle apartment fire in Gardnerville

East Fork Fire crews are tending to a three-alarm fire in the apartments between Raley’s and Smith’s in Gardnerville Tuesday evening. At least six units have been declared uninhabitable.

The initial report came in around 5:45 p.m. Occupants are being referred to the Red Cross of Northern Nevada. NV Energy and Southwest Gas are on scene. The Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting with crowd control.

Power outage affects nearly 1,830 NV Energy customers in north Carson City

UPDATE 9:50PM: NV Energy reports the 1,827 customers in the affected power outage area should now have their power back on now. All but five customers are without power in Carson City. There is an outage off of Duck Hill Road in north Carson City that is affecting 5 customers. NV Energy hopes to have the power restored by 10:15 p.m.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, New Crop 2016, by five artists from Sierra Nevada College and the University of Nevada Reno at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, June 3, 5-7pm and the artists will give brief talks about their work at 5:30pm. The show will be open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am -5pm from June 3 – September 29, 2016. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. NV Energy reports approximately 190 customers in the area are without power as of 1:05 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called to a power line down in the 1500 to 1600 block of Highway 50 East. Traffic is being diverted. All eastbound traffic is being diverted at Saliman and Highway 50 to Rand and Long and westbound Highway 50 traffic is being diverted to Russell.
NV Energy has arrived at the scene and is working on removing the lines. The call came into dispatch just after 12:30 p.m.

Spinouts, crashes and power outages reported during morning Carson City commute

UPDATE 11:15AM: Carson City is experiencing minor, localized flooding, according to the city's Facebook page. Sandbags are available at Public Works Corporate Yard on Butti Way. Call 887-2355 if you need more information. As of 11:15 there were 14 NV Energy outages in Carson City with 253 customers without power. Douglas County has 16 outages with 165 customers without power. There is one outage in Lyon County with one customer without power.

High winds around Carson City keep utility workers busy

Strong wind gusts around Carson City kept public works, tree services, cable and NV Energy crews busy Friday afternoon.

High wind speeds around Carson City: CarsonWeather.com reports a gust of 51 mph at 1:45 p.m; Carson City Airport, 31 mph; Carson Valley DRI sensor north of Gardnerville, 61 mph; 89 mph at Washoe Valley's Nevada Department of Transportation site. On I-580 at Galena Bridge a gust was reported at 84 mph; and the highest gust thus far was 135 mph at Slide Mountain.

UPDATE 1:52 PM: Carson City Fire Department and Public Works were called to the area of North Carson Street at Arrowhead where a tree has fallen and was blocking lanes of traffic and power lines on the road. Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies were called to assist and redirect traffic. All motorists should avoid the area.

High winds have whipped through Carson City this afternoon knocking down trees, snapping limbs, and dropping fences.

The tree is the first photo fell at around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Nevada and Seventh Street blocking both lanes of traffic. In the second photo, this tree fell on King street near Tacoma at around 12:15 p.m., bringing down a large pine and reducing traffic to one lane across from Carson Middle School.

Nevada utility regulators OK renewable energy power purchase agreements to serve Apple, Switch data center operations

The Public Utilities Commission approved three renewable energy agreements Monday that add 129 megawatts of solar generation capacity in Nevada and bolster the efforts of Apple Inc. and Switch, Ltd., to operate their Nevada data centers with 100 percent green energy.

NV Energy gave $146,000 in 2015 to candidates

It's good to be a monopoly.
Of the $147,000 it gave in 2015, NV Energy coughed up $55,000 after the session to legislators and their PACs, according to records on the secretary of state's web site.

Carson City Fire Department responded to the 2000 block of Sheffield Manor this afternoon for a structure fire. Crews and engines were called at around 3:40 p.m. after a report of smoke coming from the structure. At 3:53 p.m. the fire was knocked down, according to dispatch. No injuries were reported.
