After coming up short on the last day last year, A.J. McInerney and the Coronado Cougars emerged with top honors from the NIAA 4A State Boys Golf Championships on Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Senators could be darkhorses for State Championships

The road to the NIAA 4A State Championships is always difficult, but the Carson High softball team seems to have received as favorable path as possible. Two Northern 4A teams will advance to state and it figures that High Desert League champion Spanish Springs is the heavy favorite to earn one of those berths. And since Carson isn't in the Cougars' bracket, the Senators could be one of the darkhorses to grab that second spot to state.

Northern 4A track and field preview

It's all come down to the next three weekends as far as Northern 4A track and field athletes and coaches are concerned. Of course, the state meet is the ultimate goal, but first comes the Northern 4A Regionals, which get under way Saturday with the prelims at Damonte Ranch High in Reno.

The finals will be held at Damonte Ranch next Saturday and the top three finishers ineach event qualify to advance to the NIAA State Championships, also at Damonte Ranch.

Carson High remained in the top five in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Award of Excellence standings after the winter sports season.
The Award of Excellence program rates the best overall high school sports programs in Nevada based on how well schools do in athletic competition, in academics and in sportsmanship. The sportsmanship portion of the points standings is added after the spring sports season.
