Each day, Nevada Humane Society has dozens of cats and kittens arrive at the shelter. This time of year, those numbers are especially high — and right now your help is needed as the supply of cat and kitten food is running critically low.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. The dog days of August are almost over, but Saturday went to the dogs anyway at the Nevada Humane Society in Carson City to celebrate National Dog Day.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Nevada Humane Society in Carson City will offer a new clinic beginning this week to allow for low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. The clinic is part of the new Carson City Animal Shelter operated by NHS that opened October 2016.

While thousands will gather Tuesday night at Mills Park in Carson City to watch the 4th of July fireworks display, the Nevada Humane Society urges pet owners to keep their furry friends away from the thunderous booms and flashing sparks of rockets shot into the air.

Fireworks can be quite overwhelming, and possibly hazardous and even life-threatening to pets, according to the Nevada Humane Society.

The two biggest things that could happen to you this summer are entirely possible with one simple action. Purchase a $25 raffle ticket. Yep, that’s it. $25 will give you the chance to win a brand new car and save the life of a homeless pet all at the same time. It’s true, we swear.

Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities, free-roaming, feral cats in Carson City can now be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped for free as part of Nevada Humane Society’s Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Though we always expect it, we can never predict when emergency situations will happen — though it often seems to happen early in the evenings.

You’re almost there. The long weekend is just around the corner, and everywhere I go I hear of camping trips and bbq plans. As the weather heats up, Muscle Powered compensates by moving their easy hike to the cooler hours of the morning. Mother’s Day is nearly here and I bet before I even begin this you can guess what I’m going to write about, and you’re right. Here’s the thing. Just because I, along with many other women out there, don’t have human kids, it doesn’t make me any less of a person. In fact, we’re all moms too — to kids of the four-legged kind.

Nevada Humane Society’s Bone Appetit program is combining great local restaurants with a great cause — offering dining out as a way to give back to homeless pets. On Thursday, May 25, Café at Adele’s is raising money and awareness for Nevada Humane Society and you can dine with them to participate.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. Back in February, a little black kitten made headlines throughout Carson City. Oakley took it upon herself to have a nature adventure and climbed all the way to the top of an Oak tree, hence, her name. Sadly, she couldn’t quite figure out how to get down.

The doorbell rings. Dogs bark. Cats scramble to hide. Or maybe they run to greet your visitor. Either way, something big is happening. You answer the door to find the Fed Ex guy with a giant cardboard box. It’s like Christmas, Halloween and a birthday all rolled into one — for the cats.

Art is nothing without a muse and Nevada Humane Society is grateful to have so many. Throughout the month of March, Nevada Fine Arts is raising money and awareness for Nevada Humane Society and you’re invited to join them!

I am a resident of Carson City’s West side for almost three decades and Friday morning my brother in law made me aware of a cat stuck in a 40 foot tall tree. Immediately, I thought this animal will need to be helped and will not be able to come down on its own.

In a weekend prelude to Valentine's Day, animal rescue organizations staged adoption events in Carson City Saturday to spread a little kitty and puppy love.

Following his re-election for a third and final term, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell is optimistic about what's ahead for the Nevada state capital in 2017.

He delivered his State of the City speech Monday night to dozens inside the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, reviewing the city's successes and challenges from 2016 while also reassuring residents about the future.

It’s hard to find someone that wasn’t impacted by our recent weather. From heavy rains and flooding to serious snow and ice, everyone in our community was affected in some form. The animals, homeless pets especially, were among those.
