The Nevada State Railroad Museum and its restoration team were honored with Carson City’s 2016 Historic Preservation Award presented at the board of supervisors meeting Thursday. The award recognizes decades of accumulated public service in the preservation, restoration and celebration of Nevada’s railroad heritage, centered on the recent completion of the Glenbrook steam locomotive project.

Black Bear Diner, an award-winning family dining establishment, is tentatively scheduled to open its sixth Nevada location in Carson City on Wednesday, May 25, Max Casino General Manager Lee Kennedy said this morning.

The 2016 Virginia & Truckee Railroad season chugs full steam ahead starting Memorial Day weekend, May 28-29. Authentic period steam trains ride through the heart of Nevada’s 1860s silver boom towns where legends of the Wild West were born and live on today along the original 16-mile route between Carson City and Virginia City, Nevada.

The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to open April 30.

Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Mom, long stemmed roses and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The annual Mother’s Day weekend rides on the V&T Railroad are set for Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8. The first excursion of the season is also one of the most popular as families spend the day together celebrating mom.

It’s Christmas in March for Tyler Smith, the winner of The Polar Express Ticket Giveaway for tickets to the opening weekend of The Polar Express Train Ride on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad this 2016 season.

For the past month V&T conducted surveys for customer feedback about their experience with the railroad. Each survey participant was entered in a giveaway to win four coach tickets to the highly anticipated opening weekend of holiday train, Nov. 17-20.

Known for its Wild West traditions and old miner Comstock legends, Virginia City has its authentic Nevada history and quirky, outlandish special events that keep people from around the world coming back for more.

This year is no different as the town’s 2016 special events calendar includes fan favorites such as the International Camel and Ostrich Races, the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and several parades as well as a brand new event, a western rodeo in September.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in Impaired Driving mobilization period. This enforcement detail is partially paid for by a grant from the State of Nevada, Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be participating in Joining Forces through the month of September. The focus will be impaired drivers and riders.

The first-ever symposium on the uses of autonomous systems, also known as drones, and vehicles for emergency first responders is being hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno Sept. 14-16.

Join us for the 5th annual Comstock Community Rummage Sale on Labor Day weekend in Silver City. We often think of Memorial Day as a holiday that generally marks the beginning of summer and the wonderful activities that come with this season. It is a time when we join together for the family barbecue or simply enjoying the day - the peaceful and crisp mornings, the clear skies, the view of our mountains and the still snow covered peaks to our south, or indeed the smell of sagebrush and pine after a gentle rain.

Honoring our services members is the theme of this weekend, and there will be a ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Memorial day honors all America's fallen hero's that sacrificed their lives to secure our liberty and freedom. We also honor and remember those that have recently fallen while battling the evil of tyranny. We honor and remember those that fight on the battlefields today, those that protect all of us from certain death and destruction. There are a few who do not remember nor understand what has happened and what is happening even now. Remind them.

A local metal artist, Robbie St. Clair unveiled his six-foot metal sculpture of two mustangs rearing. The Carson City Chamber commissioned St. Clair to create the piece of uniquely Nevada art.

Continuing in the vein of placing public art in public places such as that placed along the I-580 corridor as part of the freeway construction, St. Clair’s mustang sculpture was unveiled and dedicated Saturday.
St. Clair began to pursue metal 10 years ago when he found himself wanting to create art that was tangible. He began to construct signs and started taking art classes.

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. You will want to arrive before the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. to get the best photos. The V and T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. Thunderstorms with locally heavy rain and small hail are possible through tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The good news is the heavy stuff is expected to leave the area by tonight with less of a chance for storms this weekend.

Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in historic Virginia City with the annual Celebration of Heroes Parade Saturday, May 23 at noon. Taking place along C Street, the parade honors the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Cloudy days need a little color. I suggest one of the many art exhibits throughout town. The LXS Gallery in the Legislature is welcoming new artwork from Su Limbert entitled ‘Forevermore.’ The Nevada Artists Association was busy this weekend changing their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center; their landscape show opens today. Nolan Preese has an exhibit featuring photographs exploring Nevada’s watersheds on display at the Courthouse on the second floor.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 18-24: On Monday, May 18, the northbound left turn lane on Carson Street at Hot Springs Road will be closed. On Tuesday, May 19, the intersection of Division and Washington Streets will be closed due to tree maintenance. Detours will be signed.
