Carson City recognizes Nevada State Railroad Museum, Glenbrook team for preservation efforts

The Nevada State Railroad Museum and its restoration team were honored with Carson City’s 2016 Historic Preservation Award presented at the board of supervisors meeting Thursday. The award recognizes decades of accumulated public service in the preservation, restoration and celebration of Nevada’s railroad heritage, centered on the recent completion of the Glenbrook steam locomotive project.

The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to open April 30.

Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

It’s Christmas in March for Tyler Smith, the winner of The Polar Express Ticket Giveaway for tickets to the opening weekend of The Polar Express Train Ride on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad this 2016 season.

For the past month V&T conducted surveys for customer feedback about their experience with the railroad. Each survey participant was entered in a giveaway to win four coach tickets to the highly anticipated opening weekend of holiday train, Nov. 17-20.

We often think of Memorial Day as a holiday that generally marks the beginning of summer and the wonderful activities that come with this season. It is a time when we join together for the family barbecue or simply enjoying the day - the peaceful and crisp mornings, the clear skies, the view of our mountains and the still snow covered peaks to our south, or indeed the smell of sagebrush and pine after a gentle rain.

Memorial Day, May 25: Things to do around Carson City

Honoring our services members is the theme of this weekend, and there will be a ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday.
Current and retired military and their significant others can indulge in a complementary soak at the Carson Hot Springs. Empire Ranch Golf Course is offering a free round of golf with a military I.D., in addition to other specials.
Evergreen Gene’s on North Carson Street hosts their annual picnic on Monday: hamburgers and hot dogs for all.

Chamber of Commerce unveils local artist, St. Clair's metal sculpture

A local metal artist, Robbie St. Clair unveiled his six-foot metal sculpture of two mustangs rearing. The Carson City Chamber commissioned St. Clair to create the piece of uniquely Nevada art.

Continuing in the vein of placing public art in public places such as that placed along the I-580 corridor as part of the freeway construction, St. Clair’s mustang sculpture was unveiled and dedicated Saturday.
St. Clair began to pursue metal 10 years ago when he found himself wanting to create art that was tangible. He began to construct signs and started taking art classes.

Carson City area weather: Showers to continue through tonight, ease some over weekend

Thunderstorms with locally heavy rain and small hail are possible through tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The good news is the heavy stuff is expected to leave the area by tonight with less of a chance for storms this weekend.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop Friday afternoon and move slowly across the Sierra into much of Western Nevada with some water ponding on area roads and gusty outflow winds up to 40 mph possible.

The LXS Gallery in the Legislature is welcoming new artwork from Su Limbert entitled ‘Forevermore.’ The Nevada Artists Association was busy this weekend changing their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center; their landscape show opens today. Nolan Preese has an exhibit featuring photographs exploring Nevada’s watersheds on display at the Courthouse on the second floor.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 18-24: On Monday, May 18, the northbound left turn lane on Carson Street at Hot Springs Road will be closed. On Tuesday, May 19, the intersection of Division and Washington Streets will be closed due to tree maintenance. Detours will be signed.
