CARSON CITY — Rusty Young by his own assessment, was born to play music. With half a century of performing, recording and touring with his band Poco, which he co-founded in 1968 with Jim Messina, Richie Furay, Randy Meisner and George Grantham, he’s made good use of his gift.

This weekend, grab mom and the family and come on out to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, located on the campus of Carson High School.

Due to the event’s growing popularity, the sale is expanding to both Friday, May 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

UPDATE 7:18AM: Carson City Fire Department knocked down a fire at Cafe at Adele's early Thursday morning. The fire caused damage to a storage room located in the back of the restaurant. No one was at the restaurant at the time and there were no injuries, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. The cause is under investigation.

A fire has been reported at Cafe at Adele's on North Carson Street. The fire was reported at 5:19 a.m. by a security guard working for another company who passed by the restaurant and saw smoke. Firefighters are on the scene.

The fire was in the rear of the building, and chef/owner Charlie Abowd said it appears to have started in the laundry storage area. The building was built in 1864, and the restaurant has been in the Abowd family for 41 years.

For the first time in 11 years, the Concert Under the Stars will feature three main acts: Poco, Firefall and Pure Prairie League. “I’m thrilled,” said organizer Karen Abowd. “These are the legends of country rock. The community is really excited about this.”

Eleven months ago, Charlie and Karen Abowd announced that they would be putting their restaurant, Cafe at Adele's, and the historic Mansard-roofed, Comstock Lode-era Victorian home it is situated in at 1112 N. Carson Street, up for sale.

Carson City Supervisor, Ward 1, Karen Abowd hosts her monthly Walkabout Friday, Sept. 21 at Mills Park. This is her next to last event, prior to leaving office in November, and while all topics are welcomed, Abowd would like to focus as much time as possible on discussing the affordable housing crisis.

Carson City again welcomes the Fathers’ Day PowWow to the Stewart Indian School Campus for a weekend of dancing, vendors and crafts, and community. Now, when I say bicycle invasion, I’m not exaggerating. The Carson City Off-Road hosted by Epic Rides brings mountain bike enthusiasts from all over to compete in our hills. You’ll find downtown road-closures to make way for the race routes, a bike expo, beer garden, and a music festival on Saturday. Head up to Western Nevada College to welcome the Journey of Hope Bike Tour.

Despite being named a finalist for the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, the Carson City Library was not among those selected for the award by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

About a decade ago, a group of community members organized a sustainable horticulture program targeting food insecurity in Carson City. They called it the Greenhouse Project, a not-for-profit effort to improve the quality of food available to the area’s most hungry.

Thursday is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Carson City Manager Nick Marano and Mayor Bob Crowell invited all veterans who work for the City to stop by City Hall for a photo so that they may be recognized and celebrated for their service by all community members.
