The community is invited to join Carson City Supervisor Karen Abowd for her monthly walkabout Friday, Sept. 12 at noon in Mills Park.

Abowd has conducted these events as a way to gather input from constituents on issues and challenges facing Carson City and to gather their feedback and hear their ideas.

"Our walkabouts have been a wonderful way to hear what people think and feel about what is going on in our community in real time,” she said. “Everyone is invited to come out and share their perspectives with me or ask questions they may have.”

Women to Women with Carson City Supervisor candidates Karen Abowd and Lori Bagwell

This week's episode of Women to Women features Lori Bagwell and Karen Abowd. Two residents who are running for Supervisor, but in different wards — Abowd, Ward 1 as an Incumbent and Bagwell in Ward 3.

Both of these women are business veterans as well as experienced in working with budgets. Karen will be running for re-election in November, while Lori will be running for the first time in an elected position.

Author, ag expert to have 'kitchen table' conversation during Carson City Farmer's Market

New York Times author Novella Carpenter will be at the 3rd and Curry Street downtown Carson City Farmer’s Market on July 19 at 11 a.m. to chat about her bestselling memoir, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.

Carpenter and northern Nevada agriculture expert Mark O’Farrell, of Hungry Mother Organics, are set to engage in a kitchen-table visit. Under a large tent, with seats for 100, the conversation will be led by northern Nevada’s KTVN news anchor Erin Breen. The special event is aimed at raising awareness about the vital role farmers play in our lives.

Little Feat musicians Barrere and Tackett ready to jam at Concert Under the Stars

The sixth annual Concert Under the Stars, A benefit for The Greenhouse Project in Carson City promises to be bigger than ever and features Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat opening for Little River Band.

The event takes place July 9 at Café at Adele’s and the venue has been expanded to allow for greater attendance, said Karen Abowd, Greenhouse Project president.

Buyer emerges for Empire Ranch Golf Course

Silver Oak Golf Course owner Garth Richards has taken steps to buy the struggling Empire Ranch Golf Course, according to documents submitted this week to the Carson City Assessor's Office.

GSR Investments, a company connected with Richards, owner of Silver Oak Golf Course, has bought the deed of trust to the struggling 27-hole Empire Ranch Golf Course and has paid outstanding taxes owed to the city.

Carson City Supervisors agree to first reading of medical marijuana zoning areas

The Carson City Board of Supervisors tentatively agreed Thursday to allow limited zoning for marijuana dispensaries, cultivation, production and testing facilities within the city limits.

The motion, made by Supervisor Karen Abowd was unanimous. It was agreed to as a first reading and will come back to the board for a second reading of the vote, which will be an evening session.

Carson City dignitaries gather for annual bike ride through town

Carson City elected leaders and officials including new city manager-designate Nick Marano lined pedaled the west side of town Monday morning for the annual Carson City "Celebrity" bike ride.

Hosted by Carson City bicycle group Muscle Powered, the spirited group of cyclists dusted off their bikes and shared the road with motorists as part of a month of activities planned through the bicycle advocacy group Muscle Powered.

'Have a Heart' celebration fundraiser at Glen Eagles generates $31,000 for FISH

Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, raised nearly $31,000 with 37 celebrity waiters and nearly 400 in attendance Saturday night at Glen Eagles in Carson City.

This fundraiser will allow FISH to continue renovations on their 50 year old buildings in Carson City and will help in replacing their aging homeless shelter van. Special thanks to Dick Campagni Capitol Ford/Hyundai, and Carson City Toyota/Scion for donating a $1,000 gas card for our drawing and the Glen Eagle’s staff for a flawless and delicious dinner event.

Filing period closed: Carson City contested races to be decided in primary, general election

Carson City voters will go to the polls twice this year to decide who they want representing them for the contested office of sheriff.

With the filing period closed, four are running for city's top law enforcement job. The decision will be narrowed to two in the June 10 primary election. Alphabetically those who have filed are: Ken Furlong, Don Gibson, Daniel Gonzales and Lorne Houle.

In the Nov. 4 general election the contested races are as follows:
District Attorney: Mark Krueger and Jason Woodbury.

Downtown responses to the 1/8th cent tax and plans to move forward

I asked several downtown people what they think or feel about the passing of the 1/8th cent sales tax and what they see for Carson City’s future. The feelings are mixed, but the hope for an improved Carson City are united, the methods on how to do it have been up for discussion for many years and will be for many years to come.

Carson City Supervisors agree to 1/8th cent sales tax to fund city projects

In an emotionally-charged issue that brought out passionate pleas for and against, Carson City supervisors agreed to a 1/8th-cent sales tax to fund several infrastructure projects.

The final vote was 4 to 1, with Supervisor Jim Shirk dissenting. John McKenna, who was seen as the swing vote, agreed in the end which allowed for a required two-thirds majority.

There are many things currently being considered by the Board of Supervisors, including ongoing discussions about the corridor project and creating a sustainable future for the Capital City.
